Mi16 Timing Belt Change

Recommended Posts

blessed6383

hi guys

bought my new 405 mi16x4 last week and changed the cambelt today and can't get it to run now :-( (it ran fine before) made the mistake of not locking the pulleys although didn't think this mattered as they have the timing pin holes in, so after refitting new cambelt and tenioners and lining up the pulleys and holding them in place with drill bits it now wont fire up? sounds like it wants to but not enough, thought i may have had the bottom pulley 1 revolution out so took back apart and tryed again but still no luck.

am i right in thinking the cam timing is impossible to get out with the drill bits in?

The cam timing should b in the right ballpark with the pins in place.

Does the Mi16 engine have a rubber layer in the pulley to act as a harmonic balancer as per the GTi6 engine? If so it may have slipped but this would have been obvious if you checked the timing of the engine before taking the belts off etc.

dont you mean you put the drill bits in before you took the old belt off? and left them in until the new one was on and tensioned? :D

If you used drill bits, how did you get a snug fit when locking the cam pulleys? The cheap method is to use the exhaust manifold to downpipe bolts which have the 8mm body for the cam pulley, and a reduced end for a snug fit into the recess in the head. If you used drill bits, I don't understand how the cam pulleys weren't sloppy when locked, and hence probably jumped a tooth or two.

i used a broken 6mm drill bit as they fit tightly in the holes in the head but are slighty lose in the cam pulley holes. but shouldn't it still run even i a tooth out just wont run properly?

what with the double tensioner these have, and that you used the wrong thing to lock the pulleys, it would be quite easy to get the timing miles off.

Here is what you need:

Took a few minutes for a friend to make them.
