Difference Between 1.6Gti And Xs Brake Calipers

Recommended Posts

Is the only difference between the two the pad carriers? just contemplating a swap over to 1.6 hubs/brakes whilst i'm upgrading a few other things, but cant be bothered with the hassle of bleeding the brakes if i can just swap the pad carriers over instead, then swap the discs over.

Yes, you can do that.

I did this on my old STDT which uses the GTI Bendix calipers when I won some new base model calipers on ebay.:)

Remember that base model Bendix calipers tend to use a 5-sided bolt to attach the pad carriers, and a matching socket will likely be difficult to source locally.

Doesn't someone sell them on eBay? I did remove some 5 siders with a 2lb hammer and cold chisel once without too much trouble then just bought some 6 sided ones to replace them.

You can get them easily enough mail order and no doubt on eBay, but that's a fat lot of good when you're halfway through a job on a Sunday afternoon and only then realise that you need one...

Most motor factors normally have them I think.

So do the 1.6 GTI Bendix calipers but if you have an old six sided socket of a similar size you can usually get them undone using that, I did anyway.

IIRC I saw the correct five sided socket at halfrauds last time I was looking for stuff.
