Stop Light Coming On?!

Recommended Posts

v1cky1985

Hi guys

For some reason my stop light comes on, only occasionally, around 2000rpm!

As soon as I move off or rev the engine a little it goes off again!

Any one have any ideas?

Thanx

sounds like a dodgy oil pressure switch, your oil pressure guage doesnt go down does it ?

STOP light comes on for one of two reasons - low oil pressure, or high coolant temperature.

If revving the engine makes the light go out, it suggests that it's low oil pressure.

What does the oil pressure gauge (top left) read when the STOP light comes on?

Not sure what the o/p gauge reads but have noticed a couple of times that it goes up and down a few times in a few seconds or so! :os

This may be the brown multiplug that is under the air flow meter. These can often corrode / get dirty over time and cause erratic oil pressure gauges. I've had it happen to me before.

Yeh they are common problems there henry, you need to check all your conections from the multiplug and the connections on the spades off the sensors.

On thing you could do is get someone to remove the oil pressure switch (the smaller of the two) you should have a closed circuit from the spade connection to the body of it. When you get oil pressure (engine running) it breaks the circuit hitting the light off. If you give it a tap when removed see if it varys from closed to open, if it does its faulty. Make sense ?

A poor / broken connection wouldn't explain the warning light coming on though.

The only way for a false illuminated light is if the wiring chaffs and shorts to earth through the engine block, or if the sender itself is faulty.

If the gauge reads nothing and the warning light is on however, you've almost certainly got a problem - DO NOT just assume it's an electrical issue without being 100% sure.

yes you right anthony but thats exactly what i was getting to. Also as mentioned by anthony its really important to keep your eye on your levels (oil and water) as it could be terminal but do get someone to look over and elinimate your electrical conections first before jumping straight in the deep end. Eaither way it could be costly if not diagnosed quickly.

The spade connection on the switch could have easily broken off and is intermittantly touching an earth, the whole engine is earth lol. Ive seen ALOT LOT stranger things happen to veichles before now lol. good luck.

I always found using cheap oil or running with the same oil for too long gave me low oil pressure. An oil change with decent oil cured it. I got to know when the car was looking a service as the oil pressure guage moved a lot more when you drop the revs or idle.

The sensor on the sump is for the oil temperature gauge, and that has absolutely nothing to do with the STOP light. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
