Am I Doing Anything Wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just after some advice...

I'm selling my 207 here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290547423147&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT but since putting it on I havent had any interest at all, not even any chancers or prank calls!

Do you think I'm doing anything wrong in the ad? Is it over priced, I never expect to sell it for £5600, but start high and be haggled down is always easier than pricing realistically and then arguing why I wont reduce the price, if you know what I mean.

Any advice or tips much appreciated!!

Cheers, Dean

As i read the listing you are setting the starting bid at £5600 so for someone to bid on your car they would have to bid £5600 minimum there is another way of setting the auction for £5600 or best offer but not sure how you do it.

i would have sarted it with a low price and but a reserve on it then if didnt make reserve you could always contact the high bidder to see if you can work something out.

I think the market is generally dead at the moment, my friend works for a dealership and in February they sold very few cars

OK thanks, I see what you mean. I did put £5600 or nearest offer, but I guess the starting bid thing will put a lot of people off. Think I'll try just placing it as an ad, with that best offer thingy.

Also slightly off topic, Im looking for a car of less value than the 207 (just want to clear the finance before the baby arrives), would any dealers be interested, as I would need cash my way?

Dean, first mistake is ebay is wank for selling decent cars, Autotrader is the way forward and always has been. I think in a lot of quarters ebay is still seen as a place to buy second hand washing machines/watches/lawnmowers or cheap new parts, and that any cars on there are dodgy/broken etc etc. I know that isnt the case as much now but it takes time for peoples perceptions to change.

Autotrader has the benefit of being the widest known seller of used cars and has the immeasurable benefit of coming out in actual magazine format so punters can go to the shop, buy it and browse like they would a newspaper. Youd be amazed how many more calls are generated on a Thursday when the mag is printed. OK its a bit more expensive but in the scheme of things it wont make much difference.

Secondly is your price, equivalent cars are being sold for less than £5600 by dealers who offer p/x, warranties and card payments so the chances of you securing that price as a private seller are slim. Id pitch it maybe at £5250 - £5300 and take offers from there, there is no point in saying you will take less than £5600 when nobody rings you and there is nobody to haggle with!

Finally dont overstate any faults on the ad, if someone rings and asks you then you must answer honestly, but its amazing how many people dont pick up on little cosmetic details in real life that may otherwise put them off when reading about them in print.

The scratch on the side would put me off straight away. It makes it look uncared for as you never bothered to get it fixed so did you bother servicing it on time etc....

Have you had a price for a cosmetic repair? If it costs £200 then it would certainly make it more saleable. Also it is a basic model so not as desirable when there are plenty out there and it is a buyers market.

Finally, get it polished up and take it out to the moors on a sunny day and get some good pics in a nice location. My E39 5 series BMW had a lot of interest as I made sure it was outside my parents house and my dads E30 M3 in the background. Lots of people commented on it and it made it look enthusiast owned. Looking on eBay, some people try and sell cars with pics that are obviously taken in a pikeys yard. Would you buy this unless it was dirt cheap? You can bet the owner looks like Rab C Nesbitt!

Try putting it on buy it now for £5600 with a best offer.

This was you will be able to see what peoples offers are and if they are way off what you want, Its generally the way I ebay and usually works.

Plus you always have the option to accepct the offer even if it is lower than you want :)

If i was you, i would start the auction at 99p and put a realistic reserve on it at a price youd be happy with then let it run its course.

You could always get a friend to bid on it for you :)

Its quite hard to sell cars at the moment with the economy in the way it is, especially with it being newish and expensive, not many people in the market. Ive been struggling to sell diesels and small cheap hatchbacks too lately :(.

good luck with the sale :)
