Well having found a car with a great shell and a fairly comprehensive history

3k in the last 18 months with a well known company for bottom end and full top end rebuild i felt fairly confidant the car would stand up well to being put through its pace on track. How wrong i was After the 100 mile journey to the track and a brief safety car guide round the track it was back into the paddock.Thought i would start by checking tyres nuts then i noticed a small patch of oil from under the car :(.Admittedly there was about a thumb nail full left on the drive way before i went but thought this would'nt affect the day.So i opened the bonnet to find a bit of oil on top of the rocker ummm i pondered and checked the breathers made sure they were tight and free from gunk cleaned up the oil and back out for my first session. After about 12 laps i could smell burning oil and then finally looked and saw plumes of smoke coming out of the exhaust.OH DEAR so limped back to paddock fearing the worse i parked up and could see oil everywhere underneath :(.I plucked up the courage to open the bonnet :( I wish i never it had blew the dipstick out and the oil cap out :( and there was about 2 litres of oil all over the engine bay :(.And when the car was started this time it sounded like it was chugging on 3 cylinders and tapping quite a bit :(.....Wow gutted does not come close 100 miles from home 200 quid down on a track day and now a knackered car.I even took the car back to the reputed garage that did the work to check it for a tapping noise i heard before i went on the track day only to be told by him the car was fine go and enjoy the track day and that i was being paraniod:(........So the search for a new engine beckons and with the help of a forum member hopefully the car will be back up and running not without putting a rather large dent in the wallet. Thanks to oli pug and pugger for offering to help me with the new engine fitting :) and helping me with trying to find the cause of the problem.

Bugger that is a shame, I did wonder where you had got to as you said hello before sighting laps. You should have said and I could have at least took you for some quick laps round before you went home.

failing that, the garage that advised you, might help out as i know he has other parts, if he is made aware whats happened. never had any bad dealings with him and he is held in high regard by a number of people i know.

Ok so an update

7 hour round trip with yippeekayay :) nice one bud :) to collect a nice 74k mileage gti6 lump from Roland rat nice one bud will report back on the running of the engine once installed

you were right about the clutch though it was shagged .

Today pugger :) my local thank god :) Mobile mechanic started getting to work on the car safely tacked up in his garage ha ha while his 205mi is condemned to the asphalt outside ha ha

after mucho fettling and taking apart the car the engine was finally ready to be ejected :) and the new lump installed today after 6 hours we well as much as i like to think i helped really pugger did all the work while i stood round cleaning the dirty bay typical ocd overdrive. So tomorrow just leaves the loom the reassembly of ancillaries shafts and hey presto will be back up and running :).Lots of spares off the gti6 lump to be sold :)
