The Day The Mi Died...

Well, the ever faithful Mi has finally decided it'd had enough and let go :(

Even with a baffled and gated sump, extended pick-up, oil cooler and a Grp A spring the dreaded surge issue reared its ugly head and claimed another engine.

Still. 27 trackdays, 13k-ish road miles over 4 years i suppose it hasnt faired so badly..

Well, i cant recall the exact moment it started to rattle, but i think it was going through the new chicane section at Donington which used to be called Coppice i think? In fairness it was on slicks, at full tilt, full chat, chasing down some fellow 205'ers..

I know as i got onto Starkeys it had lost nearly all oil pressure and had the rattle, then death shortly followed!

looks like the little end went rather than big end.

That looks very much like the damage caused when boldy205's Mi went bang a couple of years ago

So it is an engine that has done 7 years of trackdays, no major rebuild work in that time?

In that case I would say that it was worn bearings that allowed the oil pressure to drop over time, then something has picked up and that has caused your failure. I do not personally believe in this fabled "oil surge".

Such a common way to go. Although iirc it was rebuilt though wasn't it Stu? if it was, what rod bolts were used just out of curiosity?

I personally wouldn't be going for a '6 if you're thinking that's a way to reliability, it seems they're all going bang these days too, IMO they have more weak points and suffer mileage worse than Mi's ever did.

Thats not bad after all that abuse surely? Mine was simailar, but one piston was totally disentigrated too! Oh, and that was on a , recently 'rebuilt' engine! HA! Who cares, life goes on!
