Best Exhaust Bodging Techniques

Recommended Posts

Batfink

My standard exhaust on the 172 is dying. I have an MOT next week but its annoyingly before I get my supersprint prototype delivered in 4 weeks time. I basically need a bodge to get me through the mot.

Things I have to hand immediately are tin foil, exhaust paste and heatwrap. I was thinking glooping loads of exhaust paste round the join, then wrapping in a thick layer of foil and then heatwrap lockwired in place.

Not sure this will be strong enough so any other options would be nice. I'm guessing removing the rear silencer completely and saying it does not need one will not go down too well lol

Yep. The old tried and tested method.

Use paste if it's a split joint.

Aluminium tape wrapped around the whole sleeve joint & then held in place by the clamp & /or additional jubilee clips.

If you need some tape let me know, I think I've a roll with not much left I can post.

Graham.

Hi Graham. Thanks for the offer. I need to sort it this weekend really so would not get to me in time. Is it cheap and available from Wickes or B&Q?

Dunno, I get it free from work.

I expect that you could buy some from somewhere such as B&Q, Wickes or halfrauds though but I've never had to look for it.

Wouldn't expect it to be to expensive but you never know.

I could post today if needed, assuming I find it of course so it would be with you either tomorrow or Monday at the latest if that's anygood.

Graham.

If they're only small holes, lobbing it up with copious amounts of exhaust putty normally works in the short term atleast. Larger holes will likely need some kind of reinforcement.

(alternatively, you could just pop over and borrow Lisa's exhaust when she's not looking :P)

Halfrauds sell some stuff thats really good but I can't think what its called for the life of me! They sell a brand name variety and there own, think the brand name one is cheaper actually but they both exactly the same!

Its a putty but its meant for repairs, smallish tin, warm the exhaust up, slap it on then leave it and it goes rock hard, it really is the nuts! You should get some! Just wish I could remember the name for you! Its £3.50 IIRC

Gun gum! :)

I think?

well its bodged! I think I got the holes but it was in a rather dire state. A 1.5cm square hole was blocked up with a combination of exhaust putty and exhaust wrap.

Sadly there was a massive crack running two inches along as well so this was a combination of a coke can, more putty and wrap and a bit of gasket sealer as well.

All held together with a U clamp, some wire and some jubilee clips.

Fingers crossed the car will hold up for an MOT.
