205 Gti 1.9 G Reg.. Idle Fault

Recommended Posts

Collier

I have a 205 gti 1.9 1990 plate..

When i start it every morning.. it will rev up and cut str8 out.. i have to hold my foot on gas for about 30 seconds.. then it will just idle all over from 2000rpm down to 100rpm .. dipping and raising.

Then if i set off.. it will kangaroo down the road or stall. Then after a few minutes it will idle great a 1000rpm.. But then another 10 minutes later when its warm it idles at 2000rpm.

I have been told its the Air Flow Meter.. but can all these faults just be down to ONE thing.. the afm..

Or is there something else i should be looking to change too..

Cheers

My 91 H-Plate 1.9 usually cut out until it's warmed up, however it never jumped up the 2,000 rpm.

I'm sure someone will be along to offer some advice.

Cheers

Wow one post in & already forgotten the rules about text speak;

when asking questions or making replies, Please make full use of vocabulary, punctuation

and grammar which means that "txt spk", "CAPS LOCK" (aka shouting) & one sentence topics

will not be tolerated.

What have you checked, cleaned or changed to try to fix this?

Check the cleanliness of your throttle body (including the air bypass idle speed screw), afm & all breather hoses, if they are dirty or in poor condition, clean / replace as needed.

The 205 GTi is well known for kangarooing but once its set up well this can be reduced to a minimum, although never to modern car standards imo.

It's also very common to have to hold the revs slightly to keep it running for the first 30 seconds.

The airflow meter can have an effect on idle but check if your sad is closing when it climbs back up by squeezing the pipe from it to the inlet pipe closed between the afm & TB. If you have the standard intake pipes then its in the front of the pipe mentioned & the sad pipe disappears off towards the back of the engine bay but yu have enough to squash it closed which should drop your revs down.

Graham.
