Idle And Mixture Issues

Recommended Posts

dee205

I'm getting the wee 1.6 ready for MOT and as I only have the car a month or so I've did the usual service too. Cap, arm, plugs oil and filter. I've also done the normal cleaning of the intake system and checking the SAD is working, which it is. (engine starts to hang if I squeeze the pipe when it's just started)

Problem is my idle is still a pain in the ass and my CO levels are sitting at around 6% and don't seem to change much if I adjust the misture screw.

Idle will run ok with all electrics on and sit at about 1.1k If I try any lower it will hunt when I blip the throttle.

My thinking is coolant temperature sensor? And or AFM?

Is there anything else obvious I've missed?

Sounds like afm to me Dee, no obvious leaks, split pipes etc? Is it the 115bhp 1.6 engine?

No leaks as far as I'm aware. Gave it a good spraying with brake cleaner to check. It's the 115 bhp engine. Trying to remember if I have a 1.6 AFM stashed away somewhere to swap it and see....

Swapping the AFM on Rich705's car dropped his co from 3.9 to 1.6 so well worth a try.

Without trying to sound like a killjoy I understand that the mixture bolt on the AFM should never be touched unless you have the relevant equipment to hand, or is that simply scaremongering tactics?

You can I believe attempt to clean up the electrical 'Sliding' track within the AFM itself to try and revive it,

I have already cleaned the afm track and I have a gas analyser to read the Co level.

Tried another afm but still no joy. Even removing the mixture screw out completely only brought me down to 3.6 so I'm going to have to source a coolant temperature switch to see if it help any.

Would 3.6 not get it through the MOT?

I'm not sure what the limit is. I alway kept mine between 1-2% If it did it would only be masking the problem though imo as there is something else causing it.

You're right the problem may still exist, but I just thought you might be in the 10 day free re-test period and be keen to get it through before the testers want to charge you another £50 ;)

Not in Northern Ireland. No such thing as a 'free' re-test. £18 re-test fee iirc and then you have a month before that runs out and then a full test needs done again. Government operated you see.
