It Went Bang :-/

Recommended Posts

Jake_GTI

Was driving up bury hill in west Sussex earlier, if anyone knows it, it's a fairly long steep hill with 2 lanes goin up so you can give it some boot :) anyway, all of a sudden the car lurched, lost power for about 2 seconds and then the exhaust went bang and power seemed to come back!? Any ideas what this could be? Is it serious? My first thought was that it could be s*it in the fuel filter as I accidentally ran it out last week and it's possibly blocked the filter or something!?

You can get a similar effect if the car loses spark for a second or two, as the unburnt fuel still being injected ends up in the exhaust and is ignited when the spark comes back.

Mine did this when the wires from the coil were loose.

You still have a coil! The thing between the battery and the coolant bottle. The lead from the middle of the dizzy will go to it. :)

More likely a last cof spark than a fuel issue. The bang was due to there being fuel in the exhaust

Check the other wires that connect to it, not just the king lead.

Check the condition of the rotor arm and contact points in the dizzy cap.

I had a bit of a 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' for a few weeks, turned out to be a duff distributor cap so I'd definitely be looking in that area like the other guys have suggested.

Think I have a spare dizzy in the garage, has been ok since apart from in btown on Friday, nightmare :( found a bolt had dissapeared from the airbox mount so it was flapping about all over the place causing all sorts of lurching etc! Sorted now and it seems fine!!

After saying it seems fine yesterday it's still lurching about a bit! Why would it be doing this? Think I need some one who knows a bit to come and have a proper look for me, could be a crate of beers in it ;-)

ok car has been off the road since monday gettin some repairs to the rear after i was reversed into, picked up the car today and it really wasnt happy while cold!! really struggling!!

went bang again and a bit of stuttering, loss of power and coming back etc!! i have checked the water and oil levels and theyre all good and no gayo so i dont think im looking at hgf with the power loss!

got home and checked all the leads are properly connected at both ends, not 100% sure they were at the dizzy end but cant tell because it seems to behave when it warms up a bit!

would heat make any difference in this scenario??

i cant work out what it could be as i have changed the afm and the pugs and leads are all fairly new, i would say no more than 6 months!

can anybody help me??
