Gear Selector Arm Split Pin

Recommended Posts

shalmaneser

My vts engine and gearbox are working beautifully (although 1st gear is a little short I reckon...) however when I replaced the selector arm for the 205 item I wasn't able to use a split pin due to the space constraints. However the bolt I used isn't thick enough to eliminate all the play meaning I've got a bit of a sloppy shift...has anyone used an expanding bolt instead of the split pin with any success? I'll try find a shouldered bolt instead which may help but any suggestions much appreciated!

Its two roll pins not a split pin.

I don't think a bolt will provide a secure enough fixing so I'd personally just replace with the original items.

You'll probably find the bolt has now worn the hole so even with new roll pins it will still have play. Found this problem on my mates car and as his box was a bit old and knackered anyway we just put some weld on it. It held fine until it stripped the teeth off fifth gear about six months later and would probably have lasted indefinitely.

Yeah sorry WP i meant roll pin not split pin. It's only been in there for 40 odd miles so unlikely to have worn it waway much, i did shim it with some coke can but it doesn't look like it's achieved much.

looks like it's gonna have to be the roll pin again.

Although i notice you can get some short shift kits with clamps that do the same job for £20....hmmmm....

Unless they've changed, those GE quickshift kits attach over the ball on the L-pivot rather than directly to the selector arm shaft AFAIK so wouldn't help you

It does look like yet another new design from GE but I agree with Anthony, that isn't meant to go on the gearbox itself.

When I rebuilt my gearbox clutch fork a few weeks ago I just got some standard 7mm & 4mm roll pins from a local motor factors & knocked the smaller through the middle of the 7mm one once the clutch fork was fitted the same as done on the selector arms originally.

TBH I'd just use the original pins rather than change it for an undersized bolt.

Graham.
