Oil Pressure Gauge

Recommended Posts

Milano

I know this has been covered but my situation is slightly different!

My oil pressure gauge (1.6 gti) sits just above the red zone at all times ie when engine is cold, hot, idle, revving etc...

I've been having the car serviced by a mechanic with Peugeot dealer experience in North London and he has replaced the sending unit and pressure switch which has made zero difference!

He now thinks the oil pump may be cause of low pressure but sounds a bit fishy to me.....surely even if the oil pump was a bit knackered the pressure gauge would show a variety of readings at cold / hot / idle / revving??

I'm happy to replace the oil pump but the engine has only done 50k miles so thinking this is a potential waste of time / money and I'd be better off first ensuring some of the electrical issues discussed in other oil pressure posts aren't the cause!?

Appreciate your thoughts!

Cheers

Steve

Before you do anything else, get a proper mechanical gauge connected to the engine and then decide if you actually have an oil pressure problem or not.

Thanks Tom will discuss with my mechanic!

Yes. I've had a proper mechanical gauge on mine for 2 years now. The difference between them was amusing.....even now the dash gauge shows 2bar even with the sender disconnected!

Nice, sounds like mechanical could be way to go.

My logic is correct though? Even if oil pump is past it's best the gauge should show a variety of readings based on engine temp / rpm?

Yes you are correct. A useful test you can do is to unplug the wires from the oil pressure sender and warning light switch and ground them to the engine block - the gauge should go to full deflection and the warning light should light up of your wiring and dash gauges are working.

Off topic, but how long have you had your 205? Cos I used to live just down the road, just south of Newington Green on Ballspond Road. Used to see a red CTI around but never any other GTIs in the immediate area.
