Mot Due Next Month

Recommended Posts

Good Evening All,

I've now had my 91 H-Plate 1.9 for a week and half and loving every minute of it.

As I'm new to 205 ownership and Peugeot to that matter I'm a little concerned about the MOT which is due at the end of next month.

I must admit that I'm more about attention to detail with regards to car ownership and I enjoy driving them. I'm not mechinically minded as such, however I can change the oil, spark plugs, filters etc etc.

My intention is to seek assistance from a friends Dad who tinkers with cars in his spare time and loves french cars.

Known faults which I have concerns with are as follows:-

1) Magnex aftermarket exhaust appears to be blowing at the front section and has a 4-2-1 manifold fitted. I'm not sure if it's meant to sound noisy on tickover. It's appears to be O.K. when cruising.

2) Rear brakes have developed a rubbing sound whilst braking. It's like a metal to metal noise, so it could be worn pads.

3) Reference item 1, would this effect the emisions test? Myself and my 3 year old Daughter have nick named the GTI the "Smelly Car". I do appreciate it's 20 years old and it's in fantastic condition for the year.

4) Reverse light are INOP and I'm trying to soure the correct size one for the BE3 gearbox as the one I received yesterday was the incorrect size. Are the reverse lights part of an MOT as I've heard on various forums that they are not.

Are there any other items which are common failures on 205. I've gone through the usual other checks for a mechanical novice.

Your comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

RickyD

The exhaust will need to be leak free for the MOT and obviously the brakes will need to be done. However the reverse light isn't part of the test so you can fix that in your own time.

The exhaust will need to be leak free for the MOT

That is not completely true. You are allowed small leaks but that is down to the mot tester’s discretion. So obviously leak free is better, for you, your car and the environment.

Yes it depends how bad it is.

The exact wording is:

a major leak of exhaust gases from any part of the system

Note: A minor exhaust leak from, for example, a connection joint or a pin hole, is not a reason for rejection

Also from the emissions section:

A holed exhaust can allow air to be sucked in, causing artificially low readings.Where a vehicle has an exhaust holed to the extent that MOT failure is warranted, the emissions should be rechecked when the exhaust is repaired even if the vehicle does not leave the testing station in the meantime. Owners should be made aware that any emission readings taken with a leaking exhaust might be incorrect.Holes not justifying MOT failures do not normally have a significant effect on the exhaust gases at the tailpipe and can be ignored.

Also might be worth checking the rear brakes are actually doing something (mine regularly gets caught like this) - drive with the handbrake on for a bit to scrape any surface rust off the discs.
