Aussie 205Gti Build Up

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I've been a long time reader and occassional poster. I've owned my 1989 205GTI for around 3 years now. In middle of last year I was ran off the road and ruined all my suspension. It was all replaced -

Rebuilt rear beam with solid mounts and GAZ adjustable dampers

GAZ strut inserts with lowered coils (I'm ditching these and replacing them GAZ coilovers)

New control arm bushes

New bearing front hub bearings

New tyres

Before this happened I had plans on building up a hot motor but unfortunately the budget didn't stretch far enough to do both. Either ways, my new motor is more than under way and being that I'm in Australia I have some great people to do the building for me. After some thought and phone calls this is what the the engine builder (Peter Taylor) and I decided on -

Series 3/DKZ bottomend

Mi16 liners, pistons and rods

At this point we agreed on a compression ratio of 11.5:1 which gives me a lot of cam options. All the machining was done on the block. So with the c/r sorted the block and liners where sent away for machining and are now done (sorry no photos). The standard crank is being used but has been cleaned up. The head has been left alone (DKZ head), was in fantastic condition. It has been cleaned up and reco'd in preperation for the compression it will be holding down. The cam, Peter is still machining this up so I don't have any details on this yet. Peter has mentioned that the Mi16 internals are quite a bit lighter than the 205GTI bits so it should rev quite nicely. In preperation for this I've gotten some double valve springs.

I have a fully progamable fuel and ignition ECU to run the motor and well as a set of 45mm DCOE style Jenvey throttle bodies. I was going to run a standard inlet manifold but being that I have already invested so much cash I might as well go all out... LOL. A few other bits and pieces I have to go into this motor -

BBM cam wheel

BBM silicon hoses (oil and water)

Quaife LSD (I'm still waiting for this one to arrive)

Davies Craig electric water pump

Gearbox wise I'm planning on using a series 1 Mi16 box with a custom setup -

1st - 2.92:1

2nd - 1.85:1

3rd - 1.36:1

4th - 1.069:1

5th - 0.865:1

CWP - 4.43:1

So this is it in a nut shell. I'm getting pretty keen to get it all fitted and I'm hoping I can pick the motor and gearbox up by mid May and fit it over the winter and have it ready cook by Spring. I've got no idea about power figures and no expectations at this stage. I'll know more when the cam is nutted out. I'll keep you all updated as bits arrive and as work is done.

Crossed fingers thats the case. I'm a bit stressed that I might have gone to hard with the compression.
