Anyone Considered, Or Done An Lpg Conversion

As with most of my stupid ideas, it'll probably never amount to nuttin. But I was looking at DIY LPG kits tonight, as the fellas on the Alfa Owners have been harping on about LPGing their 166s for the last few weeks (but getting it done professionally) and I've read with some interest.

Once you get beyond all the scaremongering bulls*it, it looks quite straight forward really.

Mind you, since it would take at least 11000 miles to break even (and therefore take me about 11 years) it wouldn't be done for overall money saving really. I just like the idea of doing something a bit different, the placebo effect (sort of) from saving a bit of money at each fill up, the cleaner running, and it would give me another reason to keep the old hag for plenty more years to come. Plus it'd be a learning experience.

Don't think I've ever seen a LPG'd 205 GTI. So anyone else given it any thought?

Mines an Mi16 by the way.

My only thoughts on LPG are that you would be better off putting it in a bigger car as you obviously have to have an extra fuel tank taking up quite a bit of space.

Rallyman did/has/was going to on his 205, he's an ex-LPG engineer/fitter etc and has a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

LPG has been cheap for years due to the tax being low, everywhere selling kits talk about how the tax is fixed at a low rate until.... the 2011 budget. So it might become a lot less attractive tomorrow.

i have recently started to consider buting a 205 CJ and lpg'ing it for a cheap summer run around.

I've had 3 or 4 (can't quite remember) V8 range rovers running on LPG, all converted by myself.

It is simple, if not a crude technology (if you stay away from the multi point sequential injection stuff), easy to fit and the biggest job is allways trying to decide where to put the tank .

There has always been a lot of scaremongering about lpg (usually from diesel drivers) but i have never had any problems with any of the cars i have converted.

If you are doing LPG I would only use a multi point sequential injection kit, it's more to fit but more reliable, the one with a venturi bolted to the end of the inlet is crude and has a habit of poping back and blowing the air filter and it fitted airflow meter apart, you can fit a blow back valve but these never seem to save it.

As said the tanks weigh alot!

Yeah, I'm kinda going off the idea already after finding out just how bloody hefty the tanks are! :o

If I was doing it, I'd have a full tolodiol (SP?) one in place of the spare wheel. I don't care about carrying a spare. You'd see the tank under the valance, but I can't see how it'd look any worse than the spare wheel does. But the thought of having that much weight right behind the rear axle line puts me off. Then again, might make LOO even more fun

I wouldn't say it was that cheap anymore without them adding any duty tax, I can remember LPG being sold at around 45p per litre but now regularly see it at around 80-90p per litre in the occasional garage that sells it.
