Out With The Old, In With The New?

My Gti has covered 145,000 miles now, and was wondering if I should be thinking about replacing the shocks all round and also the springs?

Also the brake rubber lines might be worth replacing with braided type.

There doesn't seem to be any problems with the above, but wear and tear on shocks etc gradually creep in, so perhaps I wouldn't really notice any changes as they slowly deterioate.

 

So, what's the general opinion with items like this over long mileages, should they be replaced as a matter of course?

 

'If it aint broke, don't fix it' springs to mind, but I'm happy to keep the car in top condition.

Things like wishbone and strut top mounts and even engine mounts might be worth changing as well, these things are just as important as new shocks. How long have you had it? Cars of that millage commonly have already gone through a set of shocks so might be worth checking actually how old they are.

Actually, I didn't think of engine mounts. I have had the car from it's 3rd year (34,000 mils), so it definately hasn't had any shocks and springs.

Thanks for the tip. I'll order some new engine mounts too.

I guess the engine mounts are an easy DIY job?

If you have access to a engine lift or even trolley jack you will be able to do it, the bottom mounted needs to be pressed out (usually cut as well) and pressed back in. I wouldn't call it an easy job though. If you order some have a look at BBM ones, and read the recent thread on here about the pros and cons. I'm putting them in my road car B)

can be done by a mechanic/garage in 5 minutes if you know your way around a blow torch!

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at replacing the front shocks with Bilstein B4's and the rears with original Pug's. The front springs vary a hell of lot in price, and managed to find a pair at AEP Direct for £60.

Which leads me to Strut Mount Bearings. As I'm replacing the springs, and shocks, I guess these are going to need replacing.

Engine mounts are now very expensive through Peugeot (£91 for one of them). Wherever I see them advertised, they all seem to be sport\race spec, which again I don't want. Difficult to find standard kits at the moment.

In my experience, the Bilstein B4 dampers aren't very good. The rear B4's are just utter rubish.

You want to go for Bilstein B6's or group N's. I know they are more money, but well worth it. Eibach springs are always good, but I'm not sure they do them at standard height.. I'd also look at replacing the rubbers at the top of the strut, Baker BM do some slightly stiffer ones which are good from what I hear. I think Pug still do them at a reasonable price.

Engine mounts wise, TBH you'd be better off buying the Baker BM set. Yeah, they're stiffer, but they settle down after a while and you'd end up not noticing much difference. :) Maybe a little more vibrations! :lol:

Im in a similar position, and am planning to refresh all the suspension on a standard road 1.9, and was planning to do it with standard K6 dampers on the back and a pair of bilstein B4s on the front, are the B6s worth the consderable price hike? From a quick look they are twice the price of the B4s?

Front B4's are fine - it's the rears that aren't very good. B4 fronts and GTi-6 rears make for a nice budget setup, slightly uprated compared to standard.

Thanks Anthony. Thats what I had heard previously, but i keep putting off buying the suspension as its one of the last expensive parts I need before I start putting it back together lol.

Dont want to hijack, but what are peoples thoughts on front springs? Do they benefit from being replaced? Do springs with 100,000+ miles perform noticably differently? I guess it also depends on the quality of the replacement parts..
