Two Guages On The Right? What's Amiss?

Recommended Posts

As the topic. I have never had a problem being in traffic and all but the top one starts right at the bottom and never ventures very far. This was after driving about 10miles. The bottom guage starts just above the middle when cold.

The top is oil temp. Won't rise really unless on the motorway or track. And the other is water temp and if your car is getting that hot I'd be quite worried... Should run in the middle for crusing and should rise above that in traffic with the fan coming in on the 2nd to last line marker before the little red light.

If I'm reading rightly, the bottom gauge got that high in 10 miles? Did the fan come on at all? And what about the little red light? If your fan didn't come on, swap the thermostat in the radiator. If it's a simple sensor fault, check the wires and the 2 sensors in the back of the engine by the dizzy. Or if it's worse case senario, head gasket failure maybe... Might even be just a simple coolant leak, so I'd check that too..

thanks for the reply guys. the thing is, I've never had a problem really so I am guessing its a sensor thing, I've had it for over a year and I'm sure the engine would have burnt out by now, but not broken down.

If you say it also starts just above middle when cold, not at the bottom then it's not as bad as the guys above are making out, unless your car is constantly hot even when not running!

Sounds like a sensor problem

Oil temp guage should move in non motorway driving after a good 20 minutes gentle running, quicker when its shown some beans but mostly on the road on a standard 1.9 with oil cooler or 1.6 you won't see much above the second thick line imo.

Check the wire is still connected to the sender on the back of the sump & earth it to the block to check the guage works.

I'd be suspect of the dash having been taken apart for the water temp needle to sit centrally even when cold & moving up the scale as it warms but doesn't seem to over heat or loose water.

Graham.

i'm not sure if the dash has been taken out before but I'm sure I have seen the bottom guage start at the bottom before? not very often having said that. once in a blue moon maybe.
