No not at all! People only say the standard exhaust is better because you don't get a significant gain from an aftermarket exhaust, so the cost and noise isn't worth the performance. Anyone who tells you you're losing power with a (good) aftermarket exhaust system is talking rubbish.

I was thinking of getting a backbox purely just to make the car sound a bit better,is a rallycar after all lol.

But not sure what to get?

I think the message is pretty consistent, you wont gain anything from an exhaust, a bad one will lose you power, a good one will be about the same at best.

Take anything from there with a pinch of Salt, I'm sure he got banned on this forum a while back and goes off on tanget's quite often on other Forum's thinking he's the best when he has never made a high power XU engine to date

But a good system, Back box has been a very age old question, For normal power GTi's you won't gain much and the old Magnex systems always cam eout the best, but if your running highter power then you need a different custom system again

I understood that the split downpipe on OE systems essentially duplicated a 4-2-1 style system, so when people put on cheap big bore systems with no split then they lost power.

At the end of the day the backbox is just a tube, not much clever going on in there so if you want to fit a larger bore one to make a bit more noise go for it, but if you want to maximise gains ensure that you have a split downpipe.

Obviously if you're hitting 8K revs then a custom manifold with tuned length headers is the way to go, but you'll have to fork out a bit to pay for it but if you've built a high revving engine you'll know that already.

Know they don't last long but what do Pug Sport ones sound like?

Don;t like them and being a tiny bore size will reduce power, These where designed in the days of the 105bhp 1.6 GTi

Anyone had any dealings with powerflow?know they differ dealer to dealer but there's one in Burnley so might try that or try and find a Magnex

Powerflow are a risk, every so often they make a fairly decent system but 95% of the time it's awful. I've seen stainless exhaust systems falling apart 'cos they were welded with mild steel wire, things like that, and generally the way it fits the car is pretty terrible.

Pugsport systems sound good IMO, but the major issue for me is they last about 6 months before they fall apart. They're a mild steel rally system, so designed to be thrown away after a few races.

As for manifolds, there's no reason why fitting a 4-branch to a mildly tuned engine is a bad idea. Sure the standard system is a 4-2-1 already but the primaries are incredibly short and there's flow restrictions everywhere. If you're going to spend money on an exhaust system then tbh I'd actually go and fit a manifold first, then upgrade the rest of the system later. The gains will be way more noticeable.
