Engine Cut Out Problem At 40Mph

Recommended Posts

Hi there

It's been a while since I've been on the site. I have a miami blue 1990 limited edition 1.6 205 gti which I use as a daily driver. For the last two years it had a problem idling whilst stationery in the winter when cold so it continuously cuts. In seems to be alright in the summer though. It is serviced regularly but the same issue arises in the winter.

In addition I have recently added a new temperature regulator which seems to have fixed the problem to a point.

But now on top of this it now no longer starts first time as it always has done in the past (even when left for a week) and tends to drain the battery as it is not firing up properly. In addition it cuts out completley doing about 30-40mph and I find that the only way to bring it back to life is to turn the ignition key whilst doing 30mph and it fires back up (sometimes!). These problems started to occur after I left the tank to go dry recently and have had the starting and cutting out issues ever since.

My garage has had a look and put a new temperature gauge which keeps it idling correctly but it still can't make it's mind up on whether it wants to start or whether it cuts out whilst driving.

Has anyone else had these problems and can anyone suggest anything that could resolve them please. By the way the mileage on the car is roughly 140,000 and I'm pretty sure it had an engine rebuild about 40,000 miles ago.

Cheers

G

Do you mean they have fitted a new ECU temperature sensor?

If so it sounds like your air flow meter has been messed with in the past to compensate for the faulty temp sensor. Now you have a good temp sensor the AFM needs to be setup again (or just fit a known good used one).
