Is This Safe!?

Firstly I must start by saying it's not a 205 GTI.....But it is a Peugeot!!

My cig lighter does not work, checked everything and all it does when connected is blow the 20A fuse. So my next thought was to wire it up directly from the battery as I use my lighter a lot for phone charger, sat-nav etc. On the bottom of my cig lighter I have a + and - terminals so that part is straight forward. I will run an in-line fuse from the battery but I will be a permanent live, but is this ok being a permant live as surely it will not draw any power unless it has something plugged into it? I just dont want my car going on fire thus me asking before I do this

Might seem bit stupid, but have a look in the bottom of the cigarette lighter socket to see if there are any bits in it. The one in my 405 lost a small bit of metal clip from the side that fell into the bottom, whenever you plugged something into it, it blew the fuse. Took ages before I figured it out.....

In theory wiring it direct to the battery should be fine, but I would first find out why it blows a 20A fuse. Have you tried a new socket on it?

Stick an inline fuse in the feed if your going direct from the battery, better safe than sorry.

Indeed so.....should it be more?

rallysteve Have you tried a new socket on it? Tried three mate and they all keep blowing the fuse

stu8v I will put an in-line fuse in. I was just thinking as its a constant feed if it would drain my battery but surely not if there is nothing plugged into it?
