Gsf Alternator Difference

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

Im looking at a new alternator for my Mi16 and from reading old posts apparently a GTi one is fine although there is a difference between a 1.6 and 1.9, 50 amps to 70 amps.

So i went into the gsf site to choose a 1.9 one but there is only a 'gti' one, part no. 903PC0080 for £54

I then checked the 405 mi16 ones 903PC0100 and they are £83.50

Does anyone know if the gti ones are the 70amps ones and also does any one know the difference between GSF's gti ones and the mi16 ones?

I have a 1.9 gti alternator (70A) fitted to my mi16.

I don't know what the output is on a mi alternator but the main difference is is the mi runs a 6 rib belt and the gti is 5. So you need to change the belt to a 5 rib one.

The one I've just taken off is a 70 amp too so Im a bit concerned now as GSF have said that the gti one is a 50 amp unit and the mi16 one is a 80 amp unit.

Can someone confirm which would be best suited for a car that is running standard lights and a normal car stereo.

50 amps is fine. I've had one on my mi16 for years with no problems.

Be wary of GSF alternators! I've only just got my money back after a long argument over a faulty (not charging at high revs) alternator.

I'm taking a Valeo unit for a refurb at a reputable local alternator/starter place instead.

I've had no issues at all with my GSF sourced Alternator, it was a Hella remanufactured unit :)

Only 1.6 GTi's had 50amp Alt's, GSF parts lists letting them down again, might be worth asking about other BX's etc with the 8v engine, Maybe a BX GTi 8v would show a 70amp version but check first as Recon units can be anything at all

Sorry miles what do you mean by 'anything at all'?

Will these be reconditioned units or new ones?

Recon units can be anything from any model really so it's pot luck if you get a good branded one or not
