Nearly Two Years Without A 205 Gti....then

Recommended Posts

Phil H

As I'm sure you all know, I sold my 205 Griffe (ish) to Carl Chambers nearly two years ago now and am driving a Civic Type R, I said at the time that is it for 205s...the wife replied "You'll get another one"

Anyway, you know how you always have a soft spot for these cars and you keep your eye on ebay, Pistonheads etc, I was having a look last week andthis came up and as it was cheaper than an induction kit for the Civic, I snapped it up. Went down with the wife reluctantly agreeing to tow me and rescued the car.

Sorry can't remeber how to do thumbnails.

It's a non runner, owner was an old boy who has had it since 2003 and he says it was running and just stopped. He thinks it is an electrical fault. When I cranked it over it sounded like it had no compression and the unused parts of a gasket set in the boot and some old valve stem seals may point to the cause of the non running.

It has cleaned up ok, sills are perfect, likewise usual rust areas.

It has had a front ender at some point and wings without repeaters are fitted...is this an MOT fail?

The journey has started again....

Welcome back, you'll never leave.

Looks pretty tidy, nice find.

Paint looks to have survived the years being stood better than somne I've seen.

I think you'll be Ok witout the side repeaters as long as they flash correctly.

If its there it has to be working but if they aren't there you should be fine imo.

Graham.

If I recall correctly, so long as the front indicators have the correct markings on them (I think it's something like E2 but I could be wrong on that) then side repeaters are not required. Certainly a friend of mine that had a Maxi-kitted 306 used have this arguement at MOT time as his car was circa 1994 but because of the kit didn't have side repeaters.

It has been stood inside for years, so the seats are a bit musty, but paint seems pretty good.

Good to see you back again Phil! You just can't beat the cheapness of a 205 to run compared to everything else.

...well after buying a battery and a new set of spark plugs and shorting the coolant temp sensor, it started and ran, but rattles a lot from the top end. Sounds terminal, so looks like known good new engine going to be easiest route to take.

Anyone know of one?

There's a 97,000 mile 1.9 in my parent's garage, just down the road from you in Towcester which we might be able to do a deal on... It was running well and showed good oil pressure when fitted, but has one snapped exhaust manifold stud which would need drilled out. There's an an AFM and ECU for it too, but I can't vouch for the AFM because it was bought as known good, but never tried and I am now a few hundred miles away from it.

You can always get a 1.9 engine off Ebay. They are cheap these days but you may want to do a rebuild instead, as at least that way you'll know that it will last.

Just thought I would resurrect this thread to say that I ended up changing the engine as the original one was dud in a bottom end kind of way. I contemplated a 1.9 and was within a whisker of getting one, but then got a 1.6 off sorrentopete for a very keen price.

Got it all fitted and working after swapping over any missing / better bits and started first time. Usual teething troubles of the odd leaky water pipe and blowing manifold, but all easily sorted.

Tidied up the engine bay and a general once over to replace missing or broken parts, ie driving lights, roof aerial. Had to install side repeaters for MOT as had had early type wings fitted, so had to go to a scrappy to make a template to cut the holes.

Took it out for a it's MOT today and considering it has been stood in a workshop and not MOT'd for the last nine years, I expected a long list of failures and advisories from the local Peugeot dealers.....

and yes it failed.....

on headlamp alignment....

which they corrected FOC and issued me a pass certificate.

My plan is still to sell this on and get a late non sunroof in white as was quite cool driving one again. All the salesman at the dealership were waxing lyrical at the car on it's condition as I manouvred around the forecourt, reminiscing about when they used to have them. So all in all a good day. Also the test drive I had in the 107 went well, so may get one of those aswell !!!
