S16 Head On Mi16

Does the S16 head fit on the 1.9 alloy block mi16?

sorry pal dont know the answer to that,but I though most people did it the other way around as in putting an Mi16 head onto a s16 block as its not prone to oil surge and spinning bearings

I believe that it should do, but I've not personally done it that way, only the other way around (1.9 Mi16 head on a 2.0 Mi16/S16 bottom end).

 

You'll likely need to either space out or use a shorter headbolt for the rear left one, and assuming you're planning on using standard 1.9 Mi16 management/ignition, you'll need to use a 1.9 Mi16 thermostat housing, rocker cover, and inlet cam, and you'll need to blank off the vacuum pump oil return hole on the side of the head. Other than that, I think that it should fit, and should logically give decent bulkhead clearance with the standard S16 exhaust manifold (1.9 Mi16 one won't fit due to bolt pattern differences between the two heads)

 

As said, I've not personally done what you're suggesting so there might be something that I've overlooked.

I don't know who told you that, but they were talking cobblers - 1.9 Mi16 and 2.0 Mi16/S16 heads are basically the same casting with a handful of small differences. It was the later XU7/XU10 16v and GTi-6 heads that were revised and some claim reduce the tendency to suffer oil surge.

The reason i'm asking is I have a noise coming from the top end of my mi16 and rather then spending time and money trying to work out what it is/fixing it I could just swap the head. I have a complete s16 engine here which has just had the head rebuilt so if i can use that it would be great.

I'd try and investigate the noise. If you want to swop the heads over, you've got to do a bit of work anyway. You might find it's 'just' a dead hydraulic tappet (rattly noise, particularly on startup).

Fairly straight forward, but longwinded. These links to the Mi16 rebuild manual and 405 Haynes will help. Also, PeterTs website is good for refurbing the tappets.....if it is them (credit to M@tt for the manuals).

Basically, you'll need to slacken/remove the cambelt and remove the cam caps & camshafts. As I mentioned before, you'll have to do this to fit the S16 head anyway so might as well investigate the noise.

Slightly off topic, but perhaps still relevant.....whats the best way to block off the hole in the s16 head, chemical metal maybe?

The hole is a bit big for that in my opinion - when I did it, I tapped a thread into the hole and then screwed in a suitable bung wrapped with a little PTFE tape. It was a few years ago now though, so I can't remember what size thread or whether I needed to drill the hole or anything first I'm afraid, but it certainly didn't take very long from what I recall, did the job perfectly and never leaked.

You can use a Core plug or as said make a Alloy bung for it, Both easy and off the shelf
