Good evening wise and helpful sirs, as a result of a recent breakdown as a result of a knackered alternator (and a 1 and half hour wait at the roadside waiting to be collected) I've decided to try and tackle some of the rather suspect looking wiring in my engine bay. First, I give you one broken down 205-

Moving swiftly on is the first random plug, which, as you can see, originates from the coil:

Next up is the brown multiplug on above the bell housing (which I am set to replace with a brand new item from demontweeks) Could someone tell me what each of these wires are for? The exiter from the alternator has already been diverted which is the brown one. A thicker, pale greenish one has been cut out altogether?

This red one can be found behind the passenger side headlight; I am assuming this is for the n/s driving lamp? (I don't have any) Also, that brown plug which can be seen in the pic; what's that?

And on the opposite side, a yellow one, which again I am guessing is a driving lamp. (could someone confirm this?)

And finally, is this sucker; kind of hangs around behind the exhaust manifold by the bulkhead looking shifty. Is this something to do with a/c or pas?

If anyone can give me any clues to what these wires do I would be very grateful as they've been bugging the hell out of me since I've had the car, thanks in advance

Sam

First wire is nothing basically, pretty redundant now days. It was used to plug a computer in to detect faults IIRC. Ones by the headlights look like the ones for the driving lights. And the last one is the crank sensor. Also used to detect faults. So pretty useless!

The big brown multiplug usually causes lots of problems, so it is best to remove it and resolder the wires. :)

EDIT - The other brown plug by the headlight I'm pretty sure is nothing also.. It looks like the one that usually hangs by the battery terminal.

Ahh, thanks alot, yeah just waiting for a new multi plug to arrive (I like things to look factory lol) then the brown plug will be a thing of the past :). So i'll leave the others alone then if they're useless!

The one from the coil is either a just test point, or for connecting a suppression capacitor to stop the coil from producing interference with the radio.

The red one by the headlamp is part of the fan wiring on diesel models, and isn't used on the GTI.

The brown one in the same pic is a test connector for the fan. If you short the pins together you can make the fan come on at either half, or full speed.

The yellow one on the other side is indeed for the driving lamp. There should be an identical one on both sides.

The brown one hanging down the back is another test point. Connector to the flywheels sensor I think, and only useful if you have some ancient Peugeot diagnostic machine.

Possibly the starter soliniod has yours been bypassed?

If alternator brown is pin 1 this would be pin 5

Ah I see, that looks to be the case, any ideas why it would be bypassed? I don't like the idea of bodged wiring haha

Probably as simple as the brown multi plug being in bad condition if you are replacing it anyway just reinstal the wiring and see what happens.

As above have you got a link to the multiplug you are using?

Thanks

Roddie
