Unleaded Fuel Vs Leaded

Recommended Posts

NNPUT

My 1.9 8V was taken off the road back in 2000 and the sale of leaded fuel has obviously stopped since. I am unsure if the reconditioned engine which was fitted in 1999 will safely run on unleaded.

I am taking the engine out tomorrow (weather permitting) and wondered if there is A) anyway i can tell if it will run on unleaded and B) can i convert it to run on unleaded or is it easier to use a lead substitute?

I recall reading something about the valve seats being harder to enable unleaded fuel to be used. Is it a simple case of changing the valves??

Cheers

Mark

They run fine on normal unleaded, and better on SUL (with the timing adjusted to suit)

No mods required to the valves whatsoever :)

Cheers WP, thought it was best to checK! So is the timing retarded a little to use SUL?

Given that it is a 1.9 GTi, I would strongly suggest that you do not retard the ignition in order to run standard unleaded - in my experience, they feel distinctly flat when retarded, and subjectively down on power and economy. Keep the timing where it is and run it on super unleaded, which is also what Peugeot themselves recommended on the engine.
