Shaking Under Load, Cv Boots Are Fine Though?

My XS has started shaking under load, its generally fine with just me in the car, just a gentle wobble of the gearstick, but as i noticed last night with 4 people in the car it is shaking somewhat violently! The whole car is doing a sort of side to side wobble on acceleration. In the past on my other 205 this was down to one of the cv boots going, but i've just been under the car to have a look and they are all still full of cv grease and not a single sign of any leaks, also the driveshafts appear pretty new.

 

So what else could be the cause of this?

wheel ballance? (although its seems to have got progressively worse, and i would assume this would cause a change straight away?)

track control arms? (bushes and ball joints look OK but i havent taken them off to have a proper look)

Engine mounts? (as far as i'm aware, these are pretty new anyway)

Ovalled hubs? (not sure if this could have this effect?)

 

something else I've overlooked?

 

I think the suspension set up could do with a refresh anyway, but I'm very limeted on funds at the moment, so I'd rather replace the more knackered bits first!

Just because the CV boot hasn't torn doesn't mean that the underlying CV joints are in good condition.

 

Certainly violent shaking under load would have me looking at inner CV's first and foremost as a likely suspect.

Hmm I thought that may be the situation, unfortunately that means I'm gonna have to swap one out, then swap the other out to find the culprit. Not the cheapest option :( *goes to have a root around in the shed for spare driveshafts*

nope none in the shed :( i seem to remember giving a pair to the scrap metal pikeys last time they were round, bugger.

is there any way of checking the joint with the shaft off the car? that way i can at least just replace the faulty one?

Checking for excessive play in the joint can often give you a clue as to whether one is fairly worn and thus likely to be the issue.

would that just be a case of giving it a good yank and seeing if theres any movement? Or should i detach it from the hub end first then wiggle it round?

John, the driver's side (long one) driveshaft was brand new just before I sold it to you, the outer joint was clicking on the old one, so shouldn't be that one.

 

Also I replaced a couple of the engine mounts with new ones as the engine seemed a bit sloppy when accelerating. The only one I didn't change was the gearbox mount under the battery

inner cv joint i bet.

 

mine went on the small shaft and it felt like the engine was gonna fall out under acceleration.

 

turned out all the needle bearings had dissapeared

well, due to me being a lazy git and not sorting this problem, I caused the gearbox to sh*t itself! lesson learnt there then!
