Pfft.. insurance.

Should we start a poll on how many people have declared their engine conversions? I think the results will surprise you! :P

I don't see why everyone felt the need to chime in with their opinions about how you should sort the handling before adding power, maybe they can't read? It was pretty clear in your first post that you weren't bothered about handling and just wanted more straight line speed. Don't worry about researching, I'll answer your question.. if you want the best bang for buck then it has to be an engine swap. You could spend hundreds tuning a 1.6 8V and never notice any improvement, they're best just left alone unless you spend thousands on them. You can get a bit more poke by fitting a 1.9 engine and this is by far the easiest and cheapest thing to do, they're a straight swap and you can get the engines for peanuts. If you have a bit more to spend (£500 - £800) then a GTi6 conversion will reap massive rewards, although this is more difficult and if you can't do the necessary mods ( shortened downpipe, re-angled manifold, lowered / tilted radiator to name a few) then the costs can really start to go up.

If you don't want to do an engine conversion then to be honest I'd leave it standard. You can put an aftermarket exhaust on for a bit more noise if you like and it makes the car feel a little faster just from the sound, but don't bother with induction kits or any other bolt-on things. In this case it's probably best to try and remove weight rather than add power, as you get real performance benefits from any weight you remove. If you had a budget of £500 you could remove the spare wheel and cage, the carpet underlay (as it usually weighs about 5 tonnes due to being soaked in water), then add a GRP bonnet and tailgate, and perspex rear windows.

Are you seriously suggesting not advising insurance company of modifications?

No, and don't try and put words in my mouth.

I'm saying a large majority of people who do engine conversions, especially 1.9 XU's, don't tell their insurance company.

Stupid people do this. Chavs do this. I'd like to think that 205 GTI drivers are a cut above that level <_<

Well call me a stupid chav then, as I had a 1.6 with a 1.9 engine for a couple of years.

So you've honestly never run a 1.6 GTI with a 1.9 engine in it without telling the insurer, and you don't know anybody else who has!?

No, I have never done that. I don't know anyone personally who has either. In fact the only time I hear of people doing this is when I see awful chav wagons for sale on eBay. They always quote the old "still down as a 1.1/1.3/1.6 on the V5" (delete as appropriate) as if it's a selling point

That's not to say that there hasn't been times in my life when I may not have acted in accordance with the terms and conditions of my insurance policy, but we all do stupid s*it when we are young (as you've just admitted). The difference is that you are still a relative whipper-snapper and can't yet see the error of your ways, whereas as I'm now over 30 and know better, and have earned the right to be condescending too :P

Well I like to think I've seen the error of my ways now, as all of my mods are declared. But it's only now I'm over 25 that I get insurance cheap enough to be able to declare it without it going up bazillions. I know many people who have done the 1.9 engine conversion in particular and not declared it, as nobody will ever be able to tell anyway it's actually kinda dumb telling your insurance company about it.
