Cooling Fan Resister Wiring.

Recommended Posts

Hello all, have searched forum and can't find the answer, wonder if anybody has replaced the cooling fan resister recently on a 1.9 and could give any tips on the wiring. The problem is (talking in my limited experience) the fan resister (silver tube with a black 3 pin connector on the end) that clips into a spring like bracket under the slam pannel by the rad has burnt out. The brown connector that fits into the resister has also melted so, purchased new resister from pug. and apparantly the dealership said there was/is a mod for the brown plug end as a direct cut it off and reterminate the new plug onto the existing wiring...........job done i thought. New resister turned up no problem, new plug (mod) doesn't fit, checked with dealer, correct part no longer available however you can cut the plug off and solder new spades onto the ends of the wires and connect direct to the resister. My question is (dealer wouldn't commit) the brown bulb lighting style plug has only 2 wires going into it, one connected to the middle pin, 1 to the left hand pin depending how you look at it, because there is no key way in the resister connection end (i.e just the 3 pins in a square hole), i can line the middle pin up no problem. Will it matter which side of the middle pin (this is connecting the wires know to the resister spades) the other wire goes as there are no markings, key way, ect to give any clues...........

Any help advice would be much appreciated, many thanks,Tony.

smithy

best thing in my opinion is do away with the crap pug setup.

i changed temp switch in rad for 2 pin type and had it switching an earth for a relay coil, the relay then switches a high current earth going to the fan motor.

I have a live fused from shunt box going to relay coil pos and a thick cable from same place down to rad fan.

so far so good seems to work better than pug setup it just hast fast speed only, the main problem with original set up is the switch in rad switches a live either through resistor or direct to fan so has a tendancy to burn out.

if you want any more info/piccies pm me you email address and i will forward some on.
