Hp4-14 (4Hp14) Automatic Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Mad Professor

Good day all.

I am on a quest to try and find out as much details as I can regarding the HP4-14 (4HP14) automatic gearbox.

Well all I am really trying to find out is what is the max safe bhp/torque thease gearboxes can cope with.

Looking on Wiki I found this box is fitted to the following.

The ZF 4HP14 is a four-speed automatic transmission for passenger cars from ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Introduced in 1987, and produced through 2001, it was used in Citroën, Peugeot, and Daewoo front-wheel drive cars.

Applications

1987–1993 Citroën BX 1.6

1987–1993 Citroën BX 1.9

1987–1993 Peugeot 205 1.6

1987–1993 Peugeot 205 1.9

1987–1989 Peugeot 305 1.5

1987–1996 Peugeot 309 1.9

1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.6

1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.8

1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.9

1991–1998 Austin R17

1992–1998 Citroën ZX 1.8

1993–1998 Citroën Xantia 1.8

1993–1998 Citroën Xantia 2.0

1993–2001 Peugeot 306 1.8

1993–2001 Peugeot 306 2.0

1996–1997 Daewoo Nubira 1.5

1996–1997 Daewoo Nubira 1.8

1996–1997 Daewoo Leganza 1.8

1996–1997 Daewoo Leganza 2.0

Does anyone happen to know if it would cope with being used on a 205 1.8 STDT?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

Is the gearing right for a diesel?

Otherwise, what slushbox was fitted to the later XUD9 turbo engines like the Xantia for example? That logically should be well suited.

I did a lot of study into this when I had my Gentry auto box issues, this 4hp14 is at it's limit with anything much over 120bhp/120lb/ft.

You would be much better off with the next one up which is used for the turbo diesels in the PSA group of that vintage, I think it is called the 4hp18.

The bigger one is the 4hp20 which is used for the big PSA cars with loads of power and torque.

I fitted an Xantia turbo engine onto this 'box on my trackcar, and waited for it to break before fitting a XM turbo autobox. Still waiting... I have fitted an oil cooler though, which i believe has helped it to last as well as it has.

Yes and yes. I pulled it out of my XM along with the engine because someone on here thought they needed it and I think I took everything out, it has the gearstick etc still with it.
