Pepperpots. The 206 wheels just look 100 shades of wrong. They would work on a GTI or a more modified 205, but on a fairly standard base model, with it's retro looks, and lofty ride height, it just doesn't work. The pepperpots may not be any more right in terms of model accuracy, but at least they are period suitable.

Interesting to hear other's views.

I like both and can't decide between them. Both are great wheels but both do clash a little bit with the rest of the car. The 206s are a little bit too modern but the pepper pots make the car look a bit like a GTi wannabe..

I do also still have the GT steels but I'm not sure if I can convince Mr. KTMKate to let me keep 3 sets of wheels for one car. Maybe if I promise to start throwing away some of the other 205 crap that's cluttering the house I can strike a deal on wheels :D

:) He's as MK2 Cavalier mad as I am 205 mad, in fact probably more so - our hallway rug is an old Vauxall dealership carpet. So the fact that they're car parts is not the problem, its just that he isn't too keen on clutter and I have a bad habit of leaving 205 bits laying about all over the place ^_^

This should be the last big bill for the car. Nice new shiny exhaust pipe..

Its not what you'd call quiet, so I'm going to see how it goes and maybe have a mid box added if its too rude..

lol well it certainly helps that you are both car enthusiasts and great that you both like different marques!

i obviously side with you and i am a pretty much a lifelong 205 gti fan and am on my 3rd 205 gti and on the lookout for another too! think i got badly bitten by the 205 gti bug!

my wife asked me "why do you want a car thats almost as old as me?" when we were on the way to collect my current 1.6 gti to which i replied "if and when you learn to drive and enjoy it you may understand but until then i cant really explain other than to say they just drive amazingly!" lol! :P

on the way home in the gti i asked her if the car was as bad as she had expected to which she glared at me and conceded "NO!" lol! :D and our newborn daughter loves the car too! i only have to start it up and she immediately goes quiet and doesnt make a sound til i stop the engine and more often than not falls asleep!

so now polly is all finished what are you gonna do with your spare time now kate? you fancy a gti?

No, I'm hot planning to get a GTi. The truth is that I'm not exactly a 205 fan.. I'm just a massive Polly fan, but I like other 205s because they remind me of her :)

If I start another project it will probably have fewer wheels. I quite fancy an 'OEM+' Honda 400 Four. But first I'll have a rest from the spanners and simply enjoy driving my car again.

Good news, the little red car passed its MOT with flying colours this weekend. :)

But the gas analyser reviled why she has been a bit sluggish - CO2 was 0.32%..

I'm very happy to have her back, but have to get used to the 5 speed gearbox layout again quickly.. My daily driver is a 6 speed Volvo, but going for '6th' on the pug is not a fun thing at all  I've done it once so far and I don't want to do it again!

She looks a beut Kate, I'm still on the fence about the wheels they are a bit too modern and it doesent look like you would have trouble getting period wheels looking at the Opel and Sunbeam sitting in the backround. :D

Unfortunately the only car in the pic that belongs to me is the pug. The others are projects from the retropower stable.

I'm really not sure what to do about wheels any more but she's staying on those for a while - I need a break from buying car parts!

Gentry alloys might look nice but they are quite hard to find. I like the 106 ones below too but I have never seen any for sale and I'm not sure if they would fit.

The Gentry alloys would look good. A set are on eBay now at £60 for 5 including the elusive metal centre caps.

Very tempting.. but I think the 205 funds might have have run dry for now. :(

Hi Kate. Looking great! I was wondering if you could tell me where you got your dealer reproduction plates from? Were they also from the DMB company?

Sunroof too

140120121426.jpg

Loving this restoration but, somewhat off topic, i wondered since you've had the car in the family from new was the sunroof factory fit, a dealer fit accessory or perhaps added later? My gti has a sunroof exactly like that and i've wondered what it was all about (since its not the standard gti one) - mine has had most of the mech removed and has been screwed and sealed shut and there are no handles or switches left for it so i've wondered if you could also tell me how it is operated? Basically i know nothing at all about it and any information at all is much appreciated. Sorry to clutter your thread up.

Cheers

Sam

EDIT - just a quick edit to say pepperpots (or perhaps GT steelies) over 206 wheels every time!

It was a dealer fit option that was fitted from new but I'm not sure what brand it is.

It opens/closes by just sliding back and forward against the seal and there's a clip on the handle that latches to the frame when open or closed. I'll take some pictures of it for you when I get a min.

Thanks for the info, i'm glad that it was a dealer fit thing and not a later add-on. If you could get an odd pic or two that would be very helpful. Cheers.

I thought I'd wrap up this build thread with a couple of pictures of the finished article.

This April I got married, and a final flurry of work got little Polly ready for her staring role as my wedding car.

All of my guests know about my project and many have known the car as long as I have. This was her debut outing (with under 100 miles since restoration) so she got almost as much attention as me and the groom!

To echo the above two comments, both you and the car look fabulous :)

As the outcome of a build thread goes, I think you've just set the new benchmark in using it as your wedding car, so people are going to have to go some way to top that

Looks absolutely amazing!

My only tiny, tiny constructive criticism would be, some chrome inserts in the bumpers would be the cherry on the cake!!
