Cam Swap

Hi dudes, I am currently turning my car back to standard and had a thought.

 

Can I change the cam on my car without taking the head off? Is it easy?

 

Oh, on another note, what are the differences between a 1.9 Gti cam and a 405 SRi cam? (as I have one laying about!) - my car is a DKZ if it means anything?!

yup, quite easily timing belt needs to come off, as does the thermostat housing off the other end IIRC.

 

 

not sure on the specific details between a gti cam and the sri, but the SRI is a more torque biased engine as its in a heavier vehicle, so likely to be "lazier"

 

you will need to check the clearances and adjust as necessary, there are shims under the valve buckets which you exchange for different sizes to alter the clearance.

 

Does mean fitting and removing the cam a few times, but definitely worth getting them right as they go and sound so much nicer with them done to the right spec.
