Expensive Afternoon, Slipped Cambelt?

How pi**ed off am I have been rebuilding the engine on my CTi Turbo Technics, which has been off the road for a couple of years.

Over the past 3 weekends I have got the engine back in and finally got it running today, it ran fine for 15 mins and then would not restart after I stopped it, just got the dreaded no compresion sound as engine is turned over.

On investigation I realised I have been a prize C**K, and did not tighten up any of the bolts holding the tensioner, so belt had slipped, I have taken the cambelt pulley off and it had sheared the locating pin, so it is proper buggered.

What is the likely damage just bent valves or does it do other damage to the head/guides, and what is the likely cost of replacing valves.

Oh sh!t Vern. However my 307 HDI 90 recently did something similar and sheared off the cam belt pulley woodruff key. A new pulley and belt kit (amongst other genral things) has it up an running fine with no issues. Being 8v then the valves are squarer to the piston face than a 16v, so less likely to bend if there is contact. If you are changing the valves then you may as well do all the valve stem seals too. The main concern would be than the pistons are not damaged I guess. You may be able to see down a plug socket for an idea. I would put a pulley on and compression test it as that would indicate any lasting damage without having to take the head off. You may have been lucky and the woodruff key took the brunt of it as opposed to the valves themselves. I was glad my pulley snapped that way otherwise it would have been a head off job.

 

Another thing may be to remove the rocker cover and look for any damage there, though it would be more difficult to see.

The head had just been refurbed skim new seals etc, as has the whole engine, forged pistons, new recon turbo, new gaskets. I did manage to get it running and it sounded a bit rattley, so I have the lovely job of taking the head of tomorrow, but will try a compression test first.

Already have had the rocker cover off as an explortory and all seemed fine cam turning etc

Well on the flip side it only took 1 1/2 hours to get the head off start to finish.

On the down side all the valves have had some contact with the pistons, all pistons have marks where contact has been made, and half of the valves are bent to the naked eye.

Where can you get big valves 43.4mm inlet and 33.4 exhaust??.

Well all 8 valves need replacing, but thanks to Miles have found a place to get them from, it is Brett Simms who used to the Longmans Headwork, and by the sound of it my head is some variety of Longmans big valve head. B)

Wahoo after spending all day, getting it all back together, timing the cam up is a nightmare with the engine in the car. Have finally got it running and taken it round the block for a quick spin the map needs abit of work but can at least get it run in now.
