Time For A New Alternator

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

Well I'm getting the battery light on the dashboard glow when under electrical load. It's worse when cold, but still there when warm. The battery is testing at only 12v with about 200CCA, but it just about turns the engine over.

Multimeter across the terminals reads 12.6v doesn't change with revs, or under load. So the alternator is still working, just not as it should be. I get the same readings straight from the alternator to a good earth, so that rules out the wiring, right?

I've got a new alternator coming tomorrow, but I just want to check there's nothing blindingly obvious that it could be.

Thanks,

Ross.

we had the same symptoms, a new alternator cured the problem but the one I had would only start to charge when revs hit 2k first time round, after that it was fine, so maybe I need to locate a brand new one in the summer.

I was testing under speeds up to about 3.5k but the multimeter didn't change a bit, so safe to assume it's ka-put! :(

Can anyone tell me which of these connections I am meant to put the 'exitor' wire? There was only one choice on the old alternator, but two on here.

whilst you're down there make sure all the cables and connectors are free from corrosion, grease them up once refitted to prevent corrosion.

Yeah I cleaned up all the connections and replaced the excitor wire right from the otherside of the multiplug. But I still don't know which one to plug it onto?! I'll just try on both when it's got some coolant in I guess...

D+ is normally the exciter connection.

Brilliant, I'll try that first - thanks Smithy

Can you use a GTi6 alternator on a 1.9 8v??

Sorry, bit off topic!
