Coolant Light

My coolant warning light never illuminates, but I know the car has lost a little coolant recently. When should it come on (apart from when the coolant is low)? Should it illuminate with the ignition on but the engine is not started?

Have a play with the sender unit in the header tank they fill with gunk and stick up, in which case they never come on. Managed to free mine off with lots of hot water and shaking hard!! You can short out the plug to ensure the lamp and wiring are sound.

Quick question, does a phase 1.5 sender have a different amount of pins to a phase 2?

It only comes on when low on coolant, and not as a lamp test when the ignition is on (unless you're low on coolant of course)

As said, the Phase 1/1.5 sensors in particular seem to be very prone to clogging up and effectively making them useless, and really need to be cleaned/tested once a year or so in my opinion to have any kind of faith in them working in the event of a problem.

Thanks people. To short out the plug I take it that I just connect the two pins together and the lamp should illuminate?

I gave the sensor a good clean today as it was covered in gunk but I'm expecting it to be totally knackered. Is it still possible to source the sensors from Pug?

I'd also like to know this!

Both Phase 1/1.5 and Phase 2 use a 3 pin connector, but Phase 1/1.5 only has two pins connected, whereas Phase 2 has all 3 pins connected.

Are the connectors the same?

Yes but different number of wires & order iirc.

If you fit a phase 1/1.5 expansion tank & level sender to a phase 2 car instead of the black tank with sensor underneath when the level drops low it blows the fuse for the rev counter etc (#1).

Any way to counteract this?

Apparently so but I never found it & I tried all kind of different pin locations in the plug.
