1.9 8v Becoming Unreliable

Recommended Posts

JIM89

Hi puggets,

I've searched the forums for an answer but all topics i find are not starting at all.

Ill explain, my gti has been very reliable over the past year but recently it has been letting me down in the mornings before i go to work.

It seems to turn over ok, and seems the battery is charging (however when jumped fires straight away)...

I've changed the plugs but has since let me down...

Sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't?!

Is there a first place to start looking fuel, electrical wise?

Thanks,

James

It seems strange it will fire when jumped but not when under its own power. I would try a different battery first as the only difference between the two scenarios is voltage / amps. (Assuming when you say jumped, you mean with jump leads from another car and not bump started)

Yeah, though sometimes it will start on its own battery so, maybe some journeys are giving it more charge than others. Ill change it and see what happens. But i dont think it'll be cured somehow...thanks

With wiring and electricals getting very very old now it could be a number of things so when i had this problem I changed a few things thinking it was battery or alternator related but found:

1. alternator wire was barely hanging on

2. ignition coil was very old

3. igntion module

you may have some luck investigating these.

It sounds like voltage drop to me test the voltage when its turning over if it drops to low it wont start could be a dodge earth i would just disconnect the battry put another battry on it with jump leads or bolt it on and try that have a look at the earth that goes from the gear box to the spark amp plate.

it's a typical problem for cars which have been used over the winter months and for shortish journeys

a good 48hr charge or new battery should cure your problem

So when it fails to start, what are the symptoms?

Does it turn over at all? It it's turning but not firing, does it sound like it's turning slower? And does it sound like it's going to start, as in chugging in to life but not quite making it?

If it's not even turning, do you get a single click from the starter solonoid?

I got a start straight off the charger and then some solenoid repeated rapid clicking whew it would not even engage properly and no turn on the engine.

I had this problem it was the starter motor pulling too many amps, it would turn over fine but just didnt have enough left for the ign system as soon as jumps leads were attached into life she fired, or when you bumpped it!, fitted a new starter no troubles since! Happy days.
