Vts Box Question

Recommended Posts

rallysteve

Hi there,

I have a VTS box for my mi conversion. I have already put the VTS crown-wheel onto the 205 diff with new bearings and fitted it back into the casing.

I have also swapped the gear selector arm over to the straight 205 one. I am however a bit confused about the clutch lever, obviously the xsara used a push type clutch, whereas the 205 uses a pull type. Do I have to swap the fork arm and the clutch lever over to use the 205 cable.

I have a 405 1.9 mi16 valeo clutch and release bearing if that makes a difference?

Cheers Steve

Yes just swap it over with new bush's top and bottom, I think some have mucked around with cables to get the pull clutch to work but it makes life simple if anything breaks when it's a off the shelf solution.

Thanks Miles, so I need a fork/shaft and arm from a 205 box?

Thanks

Steve

Do you have to swap the crown wheels over?!

I though the 205 diff was a straight swap!

At least I've not fitted the box with fluid yet!!!!

Yes you do as the ratio will be wrong and it will sound horrid with gears meshing incorrectly

Whats involved in changing the crown wheel!? I didn't know you had to change that, I have a 205 diff ready to butcher though.

I've not done it yet (obviously!)but i dare say it's just a case of unbolting and swapping over?

It is a straight swap in, but because the final drive is different ratio (4.4 in VTS box) then you either have to change the pinion over to the 205 one to use the diff complete (giving a lower ratio FD) however if you want to retain the VTS final drive due to the different ratio (therefore number of teeth on both crown wheel and pinion) then you have to fit the VTS crownwheel over to the 205 diff.

Its pretty easy when you have it on the bench, you just remove the bolts that have the white dots on in this picture below:

then swap the crown wheels over making sure you get it the right way up :D

Ensure the bolts are in good condition (mine were stripped on the Xsara diff but good on the 205 one), clean them thoroughly and torque them up with some threadlock. Put new bearings in and pop it back into the diff case.

I have the numbers for the bearings somewhere if anyone needs them?

Hope this helps

Steve

Part number for bearing would be luuuuuuuvly :D

Also the above is very helpful, the hole 205/xsara/which diff/shafts/hubs/gearbox/clutch arm/selctor arm/clutch set up hasn't been clearly covered, or if it has there isn't a definite combination for people doing the conversion to follow.

Thanks!

I will have a look in the shed in a bit for the bearing code,

will try and do a guide if people think its worth it now I have found out about the clutch lever/arm

as discussed in my thread i just used a 205 cable with the VTS clutch, clutch arm etc all complete.

You need the 205 selector arm on the VTS box.

Steve; thanks for the heads up.

Cheers, from what I understand, you can only use the VTS fork with the VTS clutch, as I have the mi16 clutch I have to swap the fork

That would be great Steve :D

Looking at your pic the teeth do look different to each other.

I see now

The 205 crown wheel VV

th_DiffOilSensorsAdaptor011.jpg

Needs to be changed over with the VTS diff crown wheel. I did not realise the crown wheel can be removed from the inner diff. The torque setting would be handy now.

The only thing, is that iv read so many times on here to use the 205 diff when using the VTS box with 205/309 GTI driveshafts. Yet iv never seen anything about changing over the the crown wheel and iv researched loads, unless iv missed it some how :)

Bolts are handy to have, I see you have found stripped ones in yours which is common place, Nor does thread lock get used when done at the factory for some unknown reason other than cost I would think

The pinion shaft if the Xsara box isn;t compatable with the 205 one, the splines are a different thickness and the shaft is every so slightly longer

Bearings in stock as well if anyone needs them,

Is it really worth changing the bearings? They're not know for going, are they?

Allye your right theres not thats why when I was doing my conversion I started to make one, but some complete dikhed who I wont name "CosKev" (or maybe I will) just posted idiotic unhelpful comments and ruined the thread so I didnt finish it.

I didn't change the diff, I just changed the inner cup on the driveshaft far simpler and the best way imo, ive had no problems and im so glad I fitted the vts box as I was going to fit a gti6 box
