Recommended Posts

Hi all..

Just a quick question, what are people using/whats the stongest box to use for my gti6 turbo 205 gti.

I was using a standard Mi16 box and found the ratios pretty good but im upgrading the engine and looking for a suitable replacement box.

Xsara Vts any good for big power? also which is a good clutch to use?

Any info would be much appreciated!!!!

Al.

Ok then Baz if not exactly, then why is that ? I think it would help more if you explained it, instead of just pointing it out >?

So as long as a mi or vts box is in good low mileage working order theres no advantage over either of them??

Any recommendations for clutches for big power lumps??

Clutches sorry no, but as said the casings are as strong as each other but the internals i cant say for sure myself. If you talk to Miles on here im sure he can help you, give him a pm.

As for the best ratios with turbos, i cant help with that either.

Hey buddy, I run an mi turbo on bodies just under 300 brake a this point

And I've found a 1.9 gti box with 1.9 final drive doesn't hold gears for long

enough. I've found that a non turbo diesel has a 3.4 final drive over the 3:8 or 3:9 of

the 1.9 . I'm going to change to that if that helps you? Tom

or you could use the search function and find out for yourself, i was simply pointing out that statement was not correct, bad advice is worse than none at all IMO.

The ratios are very similar, though not exactly the same afaia. The casing is similar, but not the same. The clutch operation is different, as are the selector arms, therefore they're not the same.

There's also Be1 and Be3 versions of the Mi box, but both have a be3 type clutch arrangement, but still another variation so not the same.

Neither BE1, BE3 or BE4, of any configuration. You should be using an ME/ML type gearbox from a Turbo or V6 Xantia, 406 etc.

I have a low mileage 1997 xantia turbo box, with hydrulic clutch and cable shift.. can these be used?

Yes it can should be an ml gearbox if my reserch is right.Allso something like a 2.1td gearbox would take the punishement again normally an me or ml gearbox.Might be worth a look at diesel boxer vans aswell theses have some ml and me boxes .Hope this helps.

Edit allso i think some gearboxes be variants had extra webbing around the diff area allthough dont hold me to it ,But im sure i read it on here

Yes mate you did. It's mine. It's in bits atm suspension brakes and possible gear box change and a few modifications.

Thanks mate. So what are the internals on a 1.8 box grd compared to 1.9 gti?

I'm using the VTS box on my supercharged 205 and standard MI16 clutch. No problems with either so far.

My xsar box had extra balancing on the diff to reduce vibrations through the.housing :) mi16 and xsara im sure run different diff setups as people run issues with how far the shaft.sits in

I've got a VTS box on my (standard) 205 gti6 can even with the unmodified gti6 engine I reckon the first gear is a bit short! With a turbo you'd just spin the wheels I reckon - doesn't the 1.9 gearbox have longer first and second?

Could be completely wrong of course!

Could always fit the 1.9-8V internals into a VTS casing..

However for my CTi T16 I am using a Xantia 1.9TD gearbox. If that doesn't work anymore the only option is the 406 2.0T ML gearbox.
