Xs - Tu3 Head Gasket

Recommended Posts

michael_jenkins

On the way to work a few weeks ago, my 205 XS started to fire on 3 cylinders. After tweeking a lead, it ran fine!

I bought some new leads for it last weekend and before fitting, I checked the dipstick and oil cap. To my horror they were both covered in the dreaded mayonnaise-like oil.

Just wondering if anyone has a rough idead on how much I can expect to pay for a new headgasket in my TU3 XS. I haven't contacted anyone.

Many Thanks

Michael

When I did the TU3 in my Rallye the head gasket was about £40, head bolts were fine, although you should really replace them. So if you do it your self very cheap!

I agree - do it yourself to keep the costs down. It's really not that hard.

Best to allow for a replacement cambelt and tensioner though. Plus coolant and oil obviously.

The last thing is to get the head skimmed to make sure it's nice and flat for the new gasket.

Before taking the plunge and changing the head gasket, are you loosing any coolant? Is the oil level rising? Are you seeing lots more condensation from the exhaust? Are there beads of water on the dipstick? In this ocld weather, a build up of mayo is normal on the filler cap and the dipstick, especially if you only do short runs and the engine doesn't fully heat through.

As above check the suggested things before ripping head off, also if no obvious coolant loss I would clean breathers run up with a flush in and do oil and filter and see what develops.

Also if it does need head off budget for new water pump, false economy to leave it when that area is stripped anyway especially as a new tensioned up belt can cause bearing to fail.
