You will need a spare hour and a few mugs of tea.

But in all honesty forget trying to do it on the cheap, there are a few important things required, not least an aftermarket mappable ECU.

This is never going to happen it would be cheaper to buy a turbo engine and chuck it in your self i.e. 406 turbo, xm turbo etc

It can be done cheaply, then it will either piss you off with its unreliability or you will spend some money to do it properly. Megaquirt is only any good if you are an electrician and can live map yourself on the road. The only manifold you can really get in the UK is a Turbo technics one unless you make your own or restrict yourself to the 406 SRi / XM 2.0 turbo as this manifold will only use 1 type of turbo. You also need to lower the compression.

I did it cheap first and then spent a lot to do it right.

A T2 is a tiddler too!

Henry do Turbo Technics still make these manifolds?

The T2 is ideal for low boost application IMO. I dont know how far you want to go with your CHEAP turbo but you could pop a thicker metal headgasket between the block and the head and bag the engine management off a Xantia or 406. But its not alot easier or cheaper than getting the entire engine.

I think the bottom line is there is no such thing as a CHEAP DIY TURBO unless you come across a bargain donor car.

TT don't do the manifolds. 205parts.com had some copies made but these have all gone now. The 406/XM Motronic MP3.2 does work but the loom is aweful and I got mine totally remade to stop the ecu being behind the headlight and the bulkhead loom coming out and resting on the turbo! It can be done, but the reason there are not a lot of 2.0T 205's is that a lot have been done poorly and have been broken

I couldnt agree more, people get a bit carried away once the engine is and running rather than going back to work out the finer details. I have seen a few insulation tape metalists in my time. :(

So if I said that I didn't want to do it on the cheap what would be the best way of doing a turbo conversion. Also I don't realy want to put the 2 litre turbo from a 406 in. Whats your suggestions.?

The best way would be to buy a 406 turbo with a quiet engine (if thats possible) so you have everything handy. Then shark someones build thread whos done the conversion and make a note of what they are doing and what problems they had to overcome.

I always start with a check-list of tasks and parts to buy. Its not a hard job but you need to be well prepared and keep things organised.

Put the head on from a 1.9 CTI. Although this has smaller valves, it has bigger chambers and therefore lowers compression without having to put decompression plates in. Then run it on the motronic MP3.2 ECU. You will need a coil pack and to fit a temp sensor to the throttle body, knock sensor, lambda in the exhaust, oil feed to the turbo, sump off and an oil return welded into it, map sensor takeoff drilled into the plenum intercooler, pipework, dropped rad etc. This will restrict you to half a bar boost unless you mess about with bleed valves to your own peril. The ECU itself cannot go above a bar without tripping out.

Still easier to stick the whole 406 engine in there
