Dead 405 Mi16

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Was driving along quite happily, went to pull away briskly and lost all drive. Car will move in reverse abeit with horrible clunking. 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th dont work. All gears select fine and the clutch appears to be ok. I can see the flywheel through the casing, is this normal? The RAC guy couldnt see any problems from looking.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Rob.

has it recently had a clutch?

check that the engine - box bolts are still present, if they are it may be a broken diff.

Cheers for the replies, much appreciated.

The clutch and gearbox were done 1 year 3 months ago. Surely if it was a driveshaft it would not move at all?

Thanks.

PS, there was a bolt hanging off the top of the gearbox, the RAC man did it up again and it made not difference. Seems a bit of a coincidence?

Sounds like the sun and planet gears gone, I had one like this the other day but more extreme that I had to take the shafts out to move it

Normally a puddle of oil under the car on this one but I;ve seen one where it's gone thru the top and been OK

in a 405 I think you'll have no issues, later 1.9's had a BE3, might need to swap a selector arm and a bracket, but otherwise straight fit.

Dead easy, Mind I'd try and keep a 16v box but to get it back on the road then any box will do, Worst case linkage wise is as WP's said as some have a different type of joint.

Excellent, thanks for your help. Looks like a gearbox change is on the cards then. Any advice before I get stuck in?

it'll get you going but wont be ideal gear ratios.

Thats alright, short gear ratios would be great fun, I very rarely use motorways or go on long journeys.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the ratios on a 1.9 box will be quite a bit longer not shorter.

I thought that ratio made it shorter, either way I only want to get it back on the road to sell it.

All BE3's have the sensor hole, You will need to swap the speedo drive thou as its different or your speedo will read wrong.

Top speed will increase by about 10mph with that box too.

All 405 Mi16's use a BE3 pedal/cable (even on a BE1 box) and your driveshafts will be fine.
