Identifying A Genuine 205 Td

Hi,

 

Probably a very daft question, but having only ever seen 205 variants in 1.6, 1.9 (and Mi) petrol variants, I was wondering how to identify a true 205 turbo diesel.

 

Basically, I am after a cheap run around while a 2l Mi is being built, and I am considering a 205 diesel turbo. I have looked on wikipedia, which indicates that there are 6 diesel variants (Style D 3/5 door, XLD, GRD and GLD and D-Turbo). However, when looking at adverts, there seem to be loads more (i.e. Inca D, Trio D etc.).

 

I am after a turbo diesel specifically for the performance over a "normal" diesel.

 

There are plenty near me claiming to be "TD" or "DT", but from the look of the adverts, none have the D-Turbo badge. Is there anything which points to a 205 being a turbo diesel, as opposed to a mere diesel? Before you all say "the turbo" ;) where is this located, and what does it look like?

the inlet pipework is a dead giveaway it goes across the back of the camcover and toward the battery and the n/a comes over the camcover toward the middle of the slam panel, and you should be able to hear the turbo going once you get past 2000rpm

"DTurbo" is a trim level - pretty much a 205 XS with a TD engine from what I can tell.

 

There's plenty of models with a TD engine fitted to them, mostly late Phase 2 models. They're rarely badged relating to the engine that's fitted.

No! Thats a n/a. And if your after performance ;) Look elsewhere! They have massive turbo lag especially when cold as the turbo is old school and the exh manifold is pants. But I expect they are a bit quicker than the normal diesels. They suffer from not having an intercooler so arent as efficient as they could be, mind you I do an 75mile round commute every day down twisty country roads and i dont hang about and I seem to get 60mpg which is the max it will get. Over 70 the fuel economy drops like a stone down to the lack of intercooler i believe.

 

Mines a 94 mardi gras and it has no badges at all so as everyone says theres lots about.

I have an n/a 1.8D in my peugeot partner (XUD7 I think) and f**k me it is SLOW! 0-60 in just under a minute.. ;)

 

So yeah, don't get a straight diesel if you want performance!

NA diesel isn't too bad in a 205 (much lighter than a Partner!) but the turbo is definately noticeably quicker, and plenty adequate for a daily-hack. Fuel economy does suffer on the turbo's though, although it's still pretty reasonable - I used to average 48mpg in my old 205 STDT.

Partners are generally the DW8 engine rather than an XUD9, a more modern take on the old completely mechanical engine, has EGR and electronic trickery bolted to the fuel pump, later ones even has an air mass meter.

 

The 1.9 DT in the 405 seems to do a little better on fuel than the 205, combination of intercooling and more torque form the extra 150cc, longer gearing too IIRC.

XRDT is also a turbo model, the oil filter is also a good give away.

 

As funny as it sounds but the TD 205 is actually quite rare and are rather sought after, they usually go for a fair bit on the bay.

I've seen STDTs that are non-runners or smashed to pieces go for around £400 recently on eBay, I'm considering selling my roadworthy one when I have it back.

Well, thanks for the input guys.

 

I'm going to look at a non descript one tomorrow. I think it is a td, but I'll let you know how I get along.

Only after a run about until the mi is ready - mpg plus a 'little' umpphh is order of the day!

i had a normal diesel and it was fine for everyday use ,i think you can upgrade the with rover parts.

upgrade? In what way? Does the rover use the 1.8 td?

People used to fit the 418td intercooler etc, but to be honest I would just buy as unmolested one as possible if you are looking for economy. STDTs sell for more due to the arches etc. As Anthony said the 3 door DTurbo is a phase 2 XS from about 91, so you will only find them from about H plate on. Most you find now are 5 door ones a the 3drs have been run into the ground. Late Incas and Mardi Gras etc can offer the same engine with PAS etc if you drop on the right one and are good value for money as a run about.

My partner is a '98 one and definitely has an XUD7 in it, as I did the timing belt a while back, I think some diesel 205's used the same engine? A whole 59bhp I think, about half of what my Xs had with the 106 gti engine in it, so a bit of a drop in power ;)

 

Its a good workhorse though for lugging tools etc around!
