Exhaust 'retaining' Springs

Recommended Posts

Obey_R

I've got a slight blow on the exhaust where I'm missing two springs that hold the centre pipe onto the manifold downpipe - I think it's a Magnex system. It's a 'ball joint' type join that's meant to allow movement but I just cannot source the springs anywhere.

Any ideas?

Escort Diesel exhaust springs do the job :) (but I'll still get mine welded- it now joins the pipe with a flexi coupling)

I have a nearly new pair I bought years ago for my old magnet system, then sold it with the old ones for some reason, they've been kicking around for years!

These used to be available from magnex but probably at a slightly inflated price over the escort etc springs (£8 each iirc when I enquired so probably £10+ now).

I've still got one with them missing but intend to fit a proper flexi pipe in place of the balljoint one because they are known to leak over time & a decent flexi looks a much better plan imo.

Well I ordered some escort exhaust springs on eBay, 99p each - they arrived this morning but either I've ordered the wrong things, or there are more than one type of them out there? I can't see how these will fit, the two 'hooks' each end aren't attached to the spring, they're simply inside it and slide in and out.

they look correct, push those hooks till they are against the spring, you'll have two loops then.

Can't seem to get these on now, despite figuring out how to get them the right way round

On each section of the exhaust I'm trying to attach there are 'loops' coming off, the same as the ends of the springs above. I'm not sure if I've got the wrong springs or if I just can figure it out, but it seems like the springs I need should have hooks on each end, rather than the loops in the photo.

Any ideas?

I can't really tell from that photo but it looks like there are 'lugs' sticking out? I'll try and get some pictures of mine tomorrow, but they're not quite the same as what is in that photo, perhaps it isn't a gen. magnex?

I'l update with some photos tomorrow, thanks so far WP.

The hook ends are sat against the spring with the loop over the tabs on the manifold.

Right managed to get some photos to try to explain myself a bit better!

S6300311.jpg?t=1303062036

The springs on there are just something put on quickly at the MOT station, but it is still blowing from the join. I can't remember what the old springs looked like but I know they were more than the springs that are on there now.

I can't seem to figure out how the springs from the escort exhaust can fit?

Any help would be great

looks to have been modified from what it was originally, or its a very old version, never seen that type myself.

They are the wrong springs if you asked for the ones pictured earlier.

But also not the right springs for your manifold.

Are you sure its a magnex because iirc I have one the same but don't think it is.

Thats the type I'm going to get cut off & a flexi joint fitted to instead.

I'll try to get a pic tomorrow of it sat next to the magnex one I got recently.

Baz, if you could get the photos that would be brillaint. Also did you get my PM about the K+N adaptor and oil filler cap?

As for the springs, I think I'm just going to weld it up. There is a sleeve joint just after the manifold anyway, so there's not really any need to have both the joins there.

yes there is if your engine and exhaust is not solidly mounted, that'll guarantee it'll crack the manifold (faster...)

Yeah hadn't thought of that. Someone said to get some tighter springs on there, the sort from a shoe fitting kit - failing that I'll weld a flexi on I think.
