Unhappy Rallye

Recommended Posts

Wallby

I haven't been using the rallye as much over the last few weeks, but even when I do use it for a while/take it on a long run, the car misfires, backfires and is quite hesitant on low revs. It is generally running really bad!

The car really doesn't like the cold mornings (does any 205?), and although it is kept in the garage, it is quite damp in there. I have also changed the exhaust recently, which had a 2mm bigger diameter and let the fuel go quite low which maybe could have pumped some rubbish from the tank through?

Im just looking for a bit of advice of where to start and try and get it running properly before its MOT is due. I don't know whether to start changing some of the ignition parts or maybe the carb needs adjusting?

Cheers

I'd bet that it is crap stuck in the primary jet.

Take the carb off, split it down and give it all a good clean out. Especially the wells that the jets sit in. Make sure that both of your pump jets are clear too.

Yea if its hesitant its more than likely something wrong with the carb, if it s not been re-furbed before give it, and all the brass jets etc a good clean, Get inside the jets with a small bit of wire too make sure there not clogged!

not worth the bother when plugs are a quid or so each, cleaning plugs is a thing of the past

I disagree, when I got the xs the rocker was leaking into the plugs so missed awfully, new gasket and cleaned the plugs it ran 100% spot on, although I did go on to replace the plugs.

the oil on the electrode will burn off with heat (unless the engine is burning oil) and all you can do with the ceramic cover and ht lead connection is wipe it, and taking a wire brush to clean them (what most people do) only damages the electrode(s) and insulator and shortens the life of the plug not forgetting the crush washer which in itself should be a once use gasket, add that to time taken to do the job and you would be silly not just to go ahead and replace them, you'd be hard pushed to find a garage which cleans plugs

Well I changed the spark plugs and and sprayed some carb cleaner down the carbs the other night and it has made a hell of a difference. Running like a dream!

I changed the ignition amplifier on mine last year, cost me a lot less than £40 though!
