306 Hdi Not Starting

Hit a brick wall with this one but first some background.

My car has never had a good idle (hunts) but once it's warmed up its much better although still not perfect but its been like this since I bought it almost 30k & over two years ago.

I was driving into work on Sunday evening & it was driving fine until suddenly the MIL light lit up on the dash & I lost power, when I pushed the clucth in the engine had stopped & obviously all dash lights came on.

The road I was on wasn't ideal for stopping where I was but I managed to coast approx 1/2 mile to somewhere I knew was fine to stop without having to cross traffic.

I plugged my ciode reader in to see what faults were logged & got the usual P0403 EGR code (its disconnected / removed) & one I've had before which knocked it into limp mode P0230 (fuel pump primary circuit malfunction).

Both these codes cleared fine but when cranking it still doesn't fire, the lift pump is running fine.

I towed it back home on Monday night & yesterday took the lift pump out after speaking to returnofthejim who mentioned the strainer filter on the lift pump getting clogged up causing running problems.

My strainer was covered in gunk & there was even some lumps present inside the strainer so I removed it & cleaned it thoroughly.

This is after the worst came off but before I took it off the pump to clean it;

Inside the pump housing was just as bad;

I took it to a friends garage & made use of their airline to get it spotless & rebuilt it once done.

I refitted it into the tank yesterday evening & then today I replaced the fuel filter & bled the system.

I checked for fuel getting to the filter wirth a bottle & length of pipe from the filter bowl & in the time the pump was running with the ignition switched on I got approx 100ml imo out. Does this sound like enough?

Anyway, with it all back together it still won't fire.

I've tested the few components I can through the ecm plug, (CTS, CAS & FPR) all within the range of resistance mentioned.

I've tried a different double relay taken from a known working car & still it doesn't fire.

I crumbled & rang the garage to see about them plugging their better snap on reader but they are to busy to do this today so I'm hoping I can get further with it & maybe even fix it.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Graham.

Did the PO230 code come back after trying to start it?

No, I checked it again before I posted this topic & only the egr code was there which I erased again.

My current thoughts are with the lift pump not making enough pressure so the hp pump is under driven.

3.2 bar would pump more than the approx 100ml I got in five seconds imo.

It's now down at the garage waitng for them to look at it but not without pushing the l/h fog light in, cracking the drivers headlight & bending the front tow eye as we parked it outside.

All looks easy to fix though so no big deal. The foglight didn't feel like it was smashed, just dislodged.:D

I'm going to speak to them first thing in the morning & if it is the lift pump I'll order the correct VDO unit from ECP (£81.60) & fit it myself when its delivered.

Its the most common fault you hear about them, though I'm not sure if there's any way to diagnose them without fitting a pressure gauge, the main HP pump's pressure can be read via live read diagnostics as there is a pressure sensor.

The flow of fuel should be much like checking a 205 really, the pumps are the same type. (changed one on a Vitara running a HDI lump, the LP unit was external and looked like a 2.0 MI16 pump!)

Yeah, I expect they'll be able to fit a pressure guage & see what its putting out if nothing else shows up on the fault code reader.

TBH I'm half expecting it to fire up fine for them. :D

The filter bowl was clean of any swarf when I changed the filter & drained the bowl.

Its at the garage now & I've given them a HP pump I had for my car but hadn't got around to fitting yet whch they suspect is the problem.

They did some tests & there was no fuel getting to the fuel rail but they think my lift pump is working fine, 3.2bar pressure is only ~36psi but they said the fuel was coming out of the pipe the same size as the pipe diameter so they suspect the pump.

Hopefully it'll be fitted by this time tomorrow & it'll be all good.

I picked my car up last Friday & with the new (s/h) pump fitted it runs aagin & has lost the chugging at idle so I shouldn't be upsetting the neigbourhood when I leave for work at ~5am anymore. :D

Been to price up a stainless straight through centre pipe today to join the de-cat pipe & I'm trying to find out what part number backbox I need to order to get the oe style oval tailpipe even if its not chromed.

There are a couple on ebay but only one shows the oval pipe & none of the exhaust books at my local motor factors differentiate which is which.

you may not get an o.e rear silencer with the shiny tailpipe any more, I know many pug specialists will grind the few spot welds that secure them and fit them to the replacement box.

Give blue_haddock a shout if you are struggling with the exhaust.

I got a centre and rear exhaust for my sisters 206 cc off eBay cheap it was almost exact replica of O/E.

The company are based in Wolverhampton and i think they actually manufacture the exhausts rather than act as reseller.

User name is mr.exhaust

Yeah, I'm sure I remember Carl posting somewhere that the oe GTI-6 rear boxes with the embellisher trim were no longer available but like I said there is one on ebay with the correct tailpipe but unchromed tailpipe trim which I can recreate with some aluminium tape from work to good effect.

Looking on service box (1726FJ) they aren't NFP but over £100 for a backbox is slightly excessive imo.

I can't find any seller called mr.exhaust on ebay.

if he does not have one drop him a mail he seemed really good when i purchased last year, the chrome tailpipe exhaust was not listed for the 206cc but he sorted one when i got in touch and did not charge any more for the tail pipe trim when they are normally £15-20 more normally.

If memory serves me correctly the centre and rear section including the clamps was £70ish including the postage and arrived within couple of days

Cheers steve, strange that my search didn't find him when I searched for sellers with that exact name. ;)

Nothing that appears right looking at his items for the 2.0 hdi. :D

Might drop him a line about one but the one he has I can find for less with the oval embeliisher trim.

Checked on service box & the hdi shares its back box with late phase 2 D turbo's.

I know the pug ones have changed for the worst now, I know this as I was surprized when I saw the pug label on first sight of a pattern box.

That sounds like even more of a good reason not to pay £110+ for a pug one then.

Old stock is fine, more recent stuff can be Arvin or ECIA (on 207's and later)

(ECIA is peugeot's own manufacturing company)

Maybe, but finding old stock locally is a different matter & ordering in would be complete cxhance if a good one turned up.

Spoke to Blue_haddock & he mentioned a Walker one with the chrome tip but its the wrong part number (1726 e3) which although it should fit isn't listed for the hdi or even late d turbo so I'll keep searching (plus he wanted £20 + vat & del more than I can find them for with an un-chromed embelisher).

Now its running right I'll be taking it for a remap once I've sorted the exhaust out but don't want a lower spec backbox.

On a side note, I ordered a 205 GTI Arvin phase 2 front pipe this week for a friends car & rejected it because it wasn't an Arvin system & had no down pipe seperater.

Checked a s/h Walker one I have here though & that has the right downpipe design.

The place I ordered it through said Arvin don't exist anymore & are now sold under the Timax Klarius name. :D

sorry to hijack but in response to grahams post above does it make much of a difference if the downpipe does not have the splitter piece in?

Not a massive amount but if you can have it as Peugeot intended then why remove part of the exhaust manifold design which gives a better longer 4-2-1 exhaust manifold.
