The real truth of this is that we are all paying for the increase in the long run even if you don't drive. The thing that the government can't get into there heads is that hit fuel and everyone pays suffers, increases in business running costs, food transport and so on.

lagonda

After 30 years delay slumbering in my garage, my Lagonda's total mechanical rebuild has just been completed. Still need to refit the tank & brakes. Don't even want to think about the cost of filling the 20 gallon tank. At least it will do more than the 4 mpg it was doing (& less than 100mpg on oil!). On the plus side it now has a higher compression ratio....but it now has 4 carburettors instead of two....so really no idea what to expect. I did once see 11mpg so hope for better than that!

i get 2 return runs from oswestry to blackpool (apx 150 mile each way)on a full tank in the leon, think thats about 50 mpg, costs 85 quid a tank. so my monthly fuel cost is £170 ffs

dread to think what it will be when i do it in the 205 gti6! im thinking £260+ if i drive nicely.... which wont happen!

Seriously?! I thought my 166 was bad. 80 quid to fill from almost empty. 72 litre tank. Around town that last me 250 miles at about 18 not average.

Yes seriously, we both have a 3.0 V6 engine, but yours is moving about a ton and 2 driven wheels less than me.....oh and mine is auto too... (not sure about your 166?)

At least I only live 3 miles from work, about £30 a week in it, which I can cope with. The 205 isn't much better anyway!

No auto here, thank f***! Yeah, granted you've got more lard to shift about, but I've formed the opinion that the 166 is a far thirstier beast than it really needs to be. I've really started to hone my Christian driving skills, but sadly I'm not yet good enough to bring about the kind of miracles needed to get any kind of respectable mileage out of it.

I've mentioned this to a few people recently - but doesn't it seem totally crazy that it was only about 4 years ago that the petrol stations were being blockaded because petrol was hitting the £1 a litre mark. How many years did it take for petrol to go from 75p per litre to £1 per litre? And yet here we are, only 4 years (or thereabouts) later and petrol has gone up by over a quarter again!

It's never going to change though is it? I think we've all just accepted our fate. This is the reality, whether it's dwindling fuel supplies or just plain greed, this is what we are stuck with. In another year or so it'll be £2 a litre. Does that sound crazy? Would it have sounded crazy to suggest 4 years ago that prices would go up by over a quarter in that time?

Think I might have to get a diesel base model 205 and run it on veg oil ;)

I'm glad I don't have to pay for the fuel in works van too!

Last week I filled up 4 times between Monday to Friday costing between £90 and £110, the most expensive diesel I found was at £1.39.6 at the services on the M1. That only gets me 360 miles to a full tank!

I honestly think this year i will just stop driving,

I already cycle to work most days (35 mile round trip)I cycle to friends, parents and pubs, i only relay use the car if im moving stuff, the odd day to work, normally sundays and mondays, or if its raining and im just being plain lazy...

and i still rack up a £200 a month fuel bill... 406 Coupe 2.2 petrol, 26 - 30 mpg, (44ish on a motorway though!!!)

I can see myself selling the coupe and using the XS when i NEED to and the kit car for fun, When its finished...

There's a common link between these two Alan... to give you a hint, it's that heavy foot attached to the bottom of your right leg :D

You know it was impossible to get respectable mpg in that 530! Hilariously cheap car for what it was, but it did guzzle. Seem to recall getting single figures on a blast ;) Remember the set of 11s I left in your workshop?

As for the Mi16, it just begs for it (now that it charges above 5krpm).

Fuel isn't going to get any cheaper, just whether Cameron and his bum-chums slow down the fuel escalator the Tories introduced years ago. I've acquired myself a 1.1 106, and was only planning on using it for a little bit whilst I save for something quite obscene. But I'm seriously considering keeping it as a cheap runabout, alongside a sporadically used gas-guzzler (and the 205 or E30 project.....).

The fuel price escalator was cancelled in 2000 after the last fuel protests. The tax stayed high though, the price we pay is 75% tax so even a small increase in fuel prices is multiplied by four at the pumps.

When I move my business to Aylesbury I will be looking for units where I can cycle to work. The days of care free motoring are over IMO

Saying that - I dont think I will mind the reduction in traffic as less people drive.

Saying that - I dont think I will mind the reduction in traffic as less people drive.

Fuel costs will have to go up considerably further than they are currently before there will be a significant reduction in traffic volume - for the majority of people, driving isn't a choice and something that they do just on a whim, but a neccesity to get to / go about their work. Public transport, for many outside of major cities, simply isn't a viable option.

The biggest change that I've seen over the past year or two isn't with the volume of traffic, but the speed of traffic - on the motorways I now see a significant number that are doing 50-60mph, whereas a few years ago it was rare for anyone to be doing less than 80 other than HGV's and the odd old dear in her Micra.

Yeah iv noticed that as well ^^ that should become more apparent than now in the near future, i still see a fair amount of speeding motorists driving fast though, mostly the big BMW, Mercedes, etc, the ones with money.

I also see growth not growing well because of this, a double edged sword.

I suspect that most of the BMW's will be 118/320d company cars - not so much that they've money, more than it's a company fuel card ;)

I used to get over 20mpg out the bmw when i had it.. used to be about 18mpg when taken for blast which i thought was good. The 535 e34 i had after the 530 was thirsty on fuel thought!(do miss the sound of the straight 6 m30 engine!)

I'm currently running around in a LDV pilot van(1.9 pug diesel engine) and get 30mpg out of it but still putting £10 or £20 in doesnt last long!!

went up to wales for the new year in my fiancee's 2lt auto scenic and cost £60!! where as couple years ago would have cost £20!!

This was me on Friday. I did 65mph all the way from Manchester to Gloucester in order to conserve fuel and it made a real difference.

I then proceed to empty the remainder of the tank by doing 9 runs on the dyno <_<

If you drive below 3 rpm or on it saves loads of fuel, i do on long journeys.

3rpm? The ewngine would have trouble idling! <_<

Seriously though, it depends on the car/gear ratios etc rather than just a generalisation like that.

Yeah 3,000rpm in my Mondeo is 90! I can quite happily stick to that. <_<

Ok then if you want to be like that then, keep the revs below 3k as much as possible going over 3k will drink the petrol. You knew what i meant any way.

What? How did you manage that? 18mpg on a blast!?!?!?! I had single figures on an EVO meet run <_<

Even Anthony the mpg Messiah could only squeeze high 20s on the motorway home. I actually thought something was seriously wrong with it when I first got it. When it became apparent that it was the norm, I gave up on economical driving.
