depends why its rattling, the cam slapping the top of it because its innards are knackered and not self adjusting? or is it rattling in the lifter bore because its worn?

or is it just a fresh build that hasnt pumped them up yet?

Excellent link, thanks.

Unfortunatly not Welshpug, engines had a lot of work & I was holding out for such luck but 1k run in miles done and theres still one chattering. Ive a spare head so ill set about cleaning a decent set up. But I think this job looks like one to hold out to do when I get some new cams (which should finances allowing be soon)

Thanks for the reply guys. (Was hoping someone would just suggest a thicker oil or something - but alas, life is never that easy)

Probably the opposite is needed with hydraulic tappets - thinner oil. When I put my Mi16 engine in some were noisy for a while, I "cleaned" the engine with a process of regular oil changes (like every 1000miles and using engine flushes too); this did help but never fixed them totally (the odd cold start they'd take a few seconds to quiten down, but still be tappety like most Mi16s are). I bought a brand new set of followers (not cheap!) and they were much better (cold start tappets stopped) but the engine by nature is a bit tappety.
