Finally 'replaced' The 205...

Recommended Posts

Rom

So as some will know, my pretty tidy 205 was written off.

Ive been sensibly trundeling round in a 306 Hdi, but finally felt the urge for another project.

Ive been abesent from here, and cars in general since the write off tbh. As much as i loved my 205, i fancied a new car to build.

Cue a 1991 CRX SiR

crappy sales pics,

Just checking in, showing im still alive, reminiscing on 205's....

I do like CRX's. I love it when the V-tec cuts in too, I've had my civic over 7 years & haven't tired of the sound at high revs, It's pretty dull under 5k though!

The Sir comes with an LSD doesn't it?

One thing that will shock you if you haven't had a Honda before is the price of spares compared to Pugs!

Nice one! Just to let you know - your old Mi16 engine went into my 205 quite nicely, took an age to do as me and my mate were doing it in our spare time and neither of us are mechanics, but it went in for its MOT on Thursday. Fingers crossed!

Stunning car with an absolutely work of art engine, the honda B series is just engine porn. It should be a B16A, the B16B (185bhp) was only in the EK9 civic. Either way, i am very much envious, always wanted a CRX. Awesome choice!!

Very cool, soon to be classic I think!

It looks so much younger than 205's produced of the same time. Although 205 design is early 80's I suppose.

Yeah its the B16a, apparently uk spec ones are 150 bhp, which no one has really confirmed, but most say its probably only down to Japs using Super Unleaded.

The B16b is indeed the Civic Type R engine, 185 bhp.

Probably not looking at an engine swap. If i did it would either be the B18C6, Integrea Type R 200bhp. Or possibly a hybrid build with a CRV 2ltr bottom end. Supposedly bomb proof. A lot of guys running turbos etc with very little mods on all sorts of engines.

Needs some tidying up, but only been in country since May 2005, im the second owner, have all mots etc. Has 105k km on the clock.

Lsd was an option on the SiRs, sadly this hasnt got it. But isnt hard to fit one, or a replacement box. Integra boxes are common, as lsd even on lower spec models.

Does have

Climate Control

Power Folding Mirrors

Auto leccy windows

No abs, was again an option, and no central locking! Apparently none did.

Handling is epic! Proper rear suspension

One thing that will shock you if you haven't had a Honda before is the price of spares compared to Pugs!

The other thing is that even though Honda spares are twice the price of Peugeot, you spend about three times less on them!

My Teg needed two trailing arm bushes and a set of droplinks in 25k miles and that was it. It had 115k on the clock when I sold it too. If you can get hold of a B186C lump, especially one which which has been turbo'd you would have a very very entertaining car. Just make sure that if you do, you get hold of an LSD to go with it.

I've always loved the CRX, I'd really like one of the very early ones as they were one of the cars I wanted to own when I was growing up, much like the 205 gti in fact.

And whoever said it was right, you never tire of the VTEC when its in the zone (only when its out of it).

My old H reg Civic 1.4 GL was the most reliable car I've had. Only thing I ever had replaced on it out of necessity was the radiator as it sprang a leak shortly after I bought it, and TBH I could have just used Radseal if I'd known better.

But my god do they like to rust ;) Even the mid-late nineties Honda's still rust to buggery in the rear arches. How can they make such good engines yet make such terrible shells?

I wonder if it's something to do with the fact that the home market, together with most of the export ones, don't use salt (or barely any salt) on the roads unlike the UK and other parts of Northern Europe?

I appreciate that it's not a Honda, but it is Japanese so bare with me. In the case of MX5's, you tend to find that many of the UK cars have rusty sills and rear arches, and yet the Jap-import Eunos Roadsters are usually in much better condition despite lacking proper underseal etc that UK cars had. Certainly the one I picked up at the start of the year, despite being one of the earliest cars, has no rust on it whatsoever thanks to the fact that it was only imported three years ago and thus lived the majority of its life in salt-free Japan. Most of the UK cars that I saw, together with imports that had been in the country for over a decade, were in much worse shape despite being years younger in some cases.

Of course, I'm not sure what excuse some of the European manufacturers have when it comes to dreadful rust on comparitively new cars - Ford Ka as a case in point anyone, or perhaps a late 90's Mercades E-class?

Anthony are you going to apply any underseal to it now it's in the UK, or just keep your eye on the bodywork ?

It's a valid point Anthony. Indeed, when I used to drool over imported Supras and Skylines etc I remember reading that imports need to be heavily rust proofed at the time of import. Which surprises me, as whilst they may not use salt on the roads, they still have a humid climate and plenty of coastal regions ;)

But even if they were a dry and arid country, I see that as no excsue to make such rust prone body shells, considering they are exporting all around the world. Surely to neglect that area would be like a UK manufacturer only making right hand drive cars and still trying to export them with an attitude of "Tough s*it if they drive on the wrong side!".

Back on topic - Rom's a lucky boy. I've wanted a CRX SiR for years.

Used to have a CRX Vtec myself and remains my favourite car to-date.

crx.jpg

As siad, you'll never tire of the Vtec and I much prefer these earlier systems as the 'crack' when you hit 5.5k is imense. Far more dramatic than the iVtec system in my dad's old Civic (k20) Type R.

No abs, was again an option...

And don't let this bother you as most of the ABS systems on these have long since started to play up.

Also, worth a note, a good source of B18 engines is the MB6 Euro only civic (or MC2 for the estate). They have the B18C4 engines with 167bhp. Plus all the ones i have ever seen have an LSD as standard. Just so you know!. They are a very very nice car to drive aswell....even if its more or less a rover 45 really.

Its pretty good rust wise

Welded up a small hole in the passenger sill today, maybe a 2"x1" plates by the time id cleaned it all up. Which for a CRX is pretty amazing. Many need sills, and inner and outer rear arches.

Inner and outer arches are fine, not even a bubble. Had the interior trim off, and signs of waxoil.

Its only been in the UK 6 years, so its doing ok.

One thing i was expecting, was to underseal it. But it has factory underseal! way too neat for anything but factory, or maybe at a push a specialist. Going to Dynax everything i can get into. Then probably stone chip the front and rear panels, behind the bumpers.

Ive noticed on new Toyotas, some arent undersealed. Just seam sealer. Not that we get told anything...but maybe theyve given up, or found some special coating.

If i did an engine swap, it would only be for an ITR lump, or possibly a B20 hybrid build. But no plans yet.
