Speed Camera Detectors

Recommended Posts

This is something I have never thought about before, but whilst watching an old episode of fifth gear it got me thinking!

Before I go any further I would like to say I don't hoon it around like the local chav breaking all the limits, quite the opposite, people who speed in pedestrian or built up areas really do my nut in!

I searched but couldn't find any old threads about this (which surprised me, or I'm not searching correctly! :)) What are people experiences and which are the better ones? Road angels seem to be the most popular but the little Piccolo seems appealing as you could mount it out of sight.

From watching Fifth gear I am aware you can spend £1500+ on these! I'm looking at the £150 end of the scale! B):D

About 9 - 10 years ago I had a snooper, can't remember the model, I didn't think much of it tbh, kept going off when there was nothing around, so I threw it in the tool box and it's still there now! I'm sure they have come a long way in that time though.

Have a look HERE, I'm sure he used to do the GPS ones as well as the add on POI for satnavs that shows you where they are on your map, but I may be getting mixed up with something else!

Most (or all) sat-navs nowadays have very good speed camera databases so I'd think the camera detectors were pretty much obsolete. My Tom-Tom hasn't missed a site yet, it even has the mobile camera sites. :)

I have a Beltronics 995 at home in Romania where they are legal, but it would be no good here against speed cameras. Thing is that the radar beam is pointing forward in your direction of travel and you'd be lucky to catch some reflection from passing cars maybe 50 to 100 m before the actual camera.

They're only efficient against old style radars mounted on police cars, since new radars use either laser or stealth mode which is undetectable until two seconds before they have the evidence for your fine.

Just get a decent camera database for you're satnav and you're set.

Hmmm, I have a tom xl which beeps loads when There is no cameras! Also the problem with satnavs is they would ways have to be on, that's why I liked the idea of small one I could mount under the dash.

In which case I wouldn't waste your money then

There's only really two types about, the 'laser' detector, which are useless because as has been said, they will only react once they have detected the laser, by which point it is already too late, if they react at all. The other type just uses GPS with a built in database of all the fixed (and sometimes mobile) speed camera sites. These are no more effcient than the SatNav's at alerting you because all they are working on is a database of possible positions - so if you don't like the TomTom beeping all the time, a specific speed camera 'detector' will be no better.

The names are misleading as the only type of 'dectector', like I said a second ago, are useless until the gun is pointed at you. All others work on a database type system.

I dont see the point in having them really, as you say you dont hoon around and at the moment speed cameras either dont work or are been discontinued, the general attitude with some councils are to ban them. I heard that nearly half of speed cameras in this country dont work.

Its the police vans that are the ones to watch, best thing is to never speed if you have to coming up to a hill or corner where they always hide behind.

your tom tom beeping when there is no cameras is telling you thats a camera van site. it doesn't know if there is a camera there or not. look at the symbol on the screen next time as they vary if its a fixed or mobile camera.

aahhh right! I know where most camera are In The surrounding counties (plus Swindon has got rid of all of them!) when I'm going some where I don't know I have the sat nav so maybe it's pointless. They also look gash mounted on your dash!

Just out of interest, where do people download their latest Tomtom camera POIs from or do you just subscribe to their service? There used to be some website called GPS positioning or something that you can get them from

I got the TomTom one and its absolute s**t, two cameras near me were removed years ago and the list never updates to reflect this. I have also been past many that have no listing on it at all. The download from pocketgpsworld is meant to be the best.

If you do want the tom tom one though, go and buy the scratch card from PC world or currys, its about half the price of Tom Tom's online price

That was it...pocketgpsworld

I've just looked and it says "A 12month subscription costs just £19.99 and an up to date list of devices support by our database" :@ I have something on at the moment but was just wondering if it was all up to date.

My tomtom is great. If I see a camera which isn't on the system. I press a little button and tell it which side of the road it was on, it then saves it to my tomtom for furture purposes. Same with mobile speed camera's. I'm subcrided to live, and if I see one I press a button on screen and if anyone in the area has live, it tells them aswell and vise versa. . . .

I'l get the make of it later for you

I'd be scared to use it not that it's illegal but if I were blasting through a speed camera and that spray stuff didn't work: result - heafty fine and some bonus points.

I think it only works with GATSO cameras as it just reflects the flash so the picture just shows glare and the plate is unreadable.
