Coil Variations

Recommended Posts

Carbs4me

Hello,

Ive just put my engine in the car, which was a replacement engine, the dizzy (which is a screw on) on the new engine is male ended and the coil is a female ended.

The lead that runs from the dizzy to the coil is also a female ended both sides? it wont plug into the coil

But on my other engine my Dizzy was also a female which is a clip on?.. i dont know what to do with it? any suggestions? is there a male ended coil?

There's basically two coils on a 205 GTi - wing mounted on pre-90 cars (female) and inlet mounted on 90-onwards cars (male)

Dizzy caps there's two main types as well - pre-90 1.6 GTi's that use a female clip-on cap, and 90-onwards 1.6 and all 1.9 (non-CAT) that use a male screw-on cap.

So depending which combination you have, depends which HT leads you need:

Wing-mounted coil and female cap = pre-90 1.6 GTi

Wing-mounted coil and male cap = pre-90 1.9 GTi

Inlet mounted coil and male cap = 90-onwards 1.6 and 1.9 GTi.

Often the HT lead sets for 1.9 GTi's include two kingleads, one for wing-mount and one for inlet-mounted coils, but not always so best specifying.

would it be posible to use the old lead, and the lead that fits the dizzy on the new engine. if i pull the ends off and clamp the wire back inside the plug housing on the on lead that currently fits my dizzy. sounds abit confusing after i read it back to myself... but im sure you will get what i mean

So sort of make a bodge lead from 2 that will fit?

Just as a temp fix to actually see if this engine runs... ive not heard it yet just got a gurantee with it.
