Cooling Fan Wont Go Off

Recommended Posts

Bit of a random one this one.

My fan only kicks in when it gets to 2/3 up the gauge and only kicks in on the fast speed.

But the really random thing is that when the temperature returns to normal the fan refuses to go off.

Only when i pull the fuse does the fan go off. If i then put the fuse back in the following day when the car is cold then fan then goes back to the off state until the engine gets warm again. (then repeat)

However if i pull the fuse and so the fan stops but then re-fit it straight away the fan comes back on at full pelt. even though the engine is at normal running temperature.

Anyone got any ideas what the cause could be?

Possible Relay? The Fan switch is new(ish) and if i bypass the switch i can get the fan to go slow and Fast.

Thanks,

Assuming you're running the standard GTi fan setup, it'll be the fan switch that's dead. There is little else it can be, as there's no relay or anything similar.

Confirm by unplugging the switch when the fan is stuck on - if the switch is at fault, the fan will turn off.

Thats a good point.

I shall unplug the switch next time the fan comes on.
